About Southbank

Southbank is a suburb in Melbourne, a coastal city and the capital of Victoria, Australia. About 18,000 people live here and it’s also a busy business district in the coastal city. The Yarra River runs along the northern border of Southbank and provides business and recreation opportunities for residents and guests.

The urban renewal program in the 1990s transformed Southbank from its industrial roots to the residential and economic area that it is now. Southbank also serves as a cultural hub for Melbourne, with many art and museum sites in the suburb, including public art on the Southbank Promenade. Restaurants and shopping areas are also plentiful and popular destinations for those in Melbourne.

Aboriginal people have lived in Melbourne for over 40,000 years, and during that time the city was a swampy area. Bridges, rail lines, and other infrastructure were put in place after the city was established in 1835. Some of the early architecture from the late 1800s and early 1900s is still seen in Southbank and adds to its charm.

Attractions in Southbank

It’s hard to know where to begin with attractions in Southbank since there are so many to choose from. The urban renewal program also brought an influx of new and revitalization of existing attractions. Each of these has its own special appeal and there are other choices available too.

  • Eureka Skydeck 88
The Eureka Skydeck 88, also referred to as the Southbank Tower, was the tallest building in Melbourne for a long time. It’s a residential tower that also has a viewing Skydeck on the top floor that’s well worth a visit when you’re in town. The Skydeck is on the 88th floor and provides views of the city that are just as spectacular at night as during the day, and another perspective to view the bay as well. It’s been eclipsed as the tallest building in the city, but also has event and meeting space as well as a restaurant, yet another reason it remains a famous Southbank attraction.

  • Southbank Promenade
The Southbank Promenade is a popular place to go for a walk and enjoy the Yarra River or head over to the restaurants and shopping area. About 1.2 miles of the Yarra River frontage is in Southbank, and the Promenade is along with this, offering a place to enjoy both the river and the Melbourne skyline. The Yarra River was one of the areas hit hard by Southbank’s industrial past, but it benefited from the urban renewal program and the promenade opened in 1990. There’s also a Northbank Promenade and both are worth a visit.

  • Sculpture Ophelia
The Ophelia Sculpture is located on the Southbank Promenade and was designed by Deborah Halpern. Melbourne used it in their tourism campaigns, and for many years it was known as the face of Melbourne. Halpern designed and painted it in honor of Ophelia, the character from Hamlet that was part love and part sadness.

Production Locations in Southbank

Production locations in Southbank have panache and there is definitely something for every type of project. There are the classic restaurant and bar spaces, as well as renovated warehouse space and private meeting rooms that fill the need of a typical studio space. One of the inviting features of locations in Southbank is that most have a lot of natural light from large windows and open floorplans. This creates an inviting space.

  • Studio Space
Sometimes, the traditional studio space is all that’s needed, and that’s okay, but it doesn’t mean you can’t have some of the added features that modern spaces offer. For example, at MicDrop South Melbourne, there is YouTube live space and recording space with state-of-the-art AV equipment.

  • Halls and Centers
A hall or center works best for some types of production, especially if a performance is in the works. These offer stages, more seating, professional theater lighting, and other amenities not typically found in other spaces. Those available include some of the best-known spaces in Southbank and Melbourne for professional performances.

  • Restaurant
Restaurant spaces are perfect for some production projects because they lend the authentic feel and vibe needed. One of our favorites is a bistro location because it's unique, some have a bar and terrace, and other distinct features that let people know your project is happening in Southbank. All the restaurant spaces come with built-in access to catering options as well.

Event and Meeting Venues in Southbank

When it comes to event and meeting venues in Southbank, we know you are working with a larger number of attendees and have some different needs aside from those that a production space offers.

  • Tower
The skyline views are something to behold, and events held on the top floor of a building are always distinct. Southbank has the advantage of being home to the Eureka Skydeck, and the event and meeting space on the 89th floor showcases the city with 360-degree views.

  • Dining Room
The dining room options in Southbank have indoor and outdoor options at many locations, and many feature contemporary designs and views of the Yarra River. These are popular with corporate events, as a meeting venue, or as a party venue for small to mid-size groups. Most also offer onsite catering, and the space option, combined with the catering reputation of the location make it an easy choice.

  • Terrace
Why not take advantage of all the urban renewal efforts in Southbank and use a terrace? One of the best features of many outdoor locations is that they often have retractable roofs, portable heating, and on-site parking that will fit a motor home and trucks. That really takes all the hassle out of the event planning process and makes it easy to welcome guests and enjoy the event.
