Mid-Century // 70's Southern California Pool Home
The Valley Capri is a private residence that features the quintessential vintage California aesthetic and Palm Springs pool vibes.
**Rate listed is for low-impact Still Photography projects with a crew less than 10. We offer test rates, low-impact handheld video, and standard film rates. Please inquire about your project for correct rates.
Built in 1953, The Valley Capri has been restored from the ground up, bringing it back to it's glory days in the 70's of North Hollywood.
Within the 1,700 sq ft single-story floor plan, you can find an array of backgrounds that suit your retro theme or time piece project. Everything in this property is authentic and true to the decade -- making it a unique location with access to a plethora of 50's - 80's references that would be near impossible to rent or recreate for a single shoot.
The backyard teleports you to a poolside getaway featuring cactus-lined white washed walls, striking 8x20 ft. breeze block wall, mid century lounge chairs and patio sets. Covered patio surrounded with hanging plants and bohemian shell hangers . Furthest corner of the yard features a wood burning malm with 70's spectrum patio dining furniture and a smaller breeze block section. Back and front yards are lit most of the day due to south facing position of the home.
There is one open room used for HMU, wardrobe, and rest area. Provided in that space is seating, folding tables, and a rolling rack.
Due to the delicate and irreplaceable contents of our home, we do not offer any other spaces indoors to set up HMU, wardrobe, or hold non-working bodies and equipment.
The entire property works as a hot set and is best suited for low-impact, still photo shoots with minimal equipment and crew.
For larger productions and video rates, please inquire within regarding rate and accommodation requirements for larger crews.
We have a 1987 White El Camino, 1965 Gold Dodge Dart, and 1978 Dodge American Clipper RV on the property that are available for rental. Please inquire within as these are not included in the hourly rate and will not be available for shooting without rental.
Jasper Johns' Studio and House Circa 1970
This house started life in the 30s as a barn and is hygge as all get-out. In the 70s it was purchased by modern arts legend Jasper Johns who hung out here with pals like Merce Cunningham, Robert Rauschenberg and John Cage. Needing a space to paint, Johns turned much of the second floor into a double-height studio, which gets glorious natural light from a combination of skylight, windows, and unique floor-to-ceiling windows that roll up like garage doors. He gave the rest of the house a similar mid-century, open plan treatment while adding a long deck and keeping the rustic features of the barn -- the exposed beams and wood walls.
The house sits against a hill on a lot of 1.29 acres. It is bounded by an old stone wall and a meandering stream, and is surrounded by ancient trees and rather undisciplined bracken. The wild, rustic look has attracted many fashion photographers. Clients have included Vogue Australia, True Lingerie, Ilana Kohn, L'Officiel and Manifesto magazines, Republic Records, and Astralwerks, a division of Universal Music Group.
IF YOU REQUEST TO BOOK: Please give me a description of your project, including the size of your crew, what type and number of vehicles, and a general description of equipment you will be using. Do you plan to dress the set or rely on extant furniture and props? Will you be shooting primarily outside or inside?
Also if you are doing a music video I'd like to know whether you will need to play live music or not. It's not necessarily a deal-breaker but I'm going to want to know. I recommend bringing a generator. This is an OLD COUNTRY HOUSE built and wired in the early thirties. The wiring system is geriatric and eccentric. It likes to take a break when it feels like it, which may not be at a convenient time for your shoot. That does not mean we will lose power entirely -- usually this a matter of going to the fuse box and resetting, but if I were you I would like to rely on my own power source if I was running heavy equipment.
