Rustic! Jasper Johns' Studio and House Circa 1970

This house started life in the 30s as a barn and is hygge as all get-out. In the 70s it was purchased by modern arts legend Jasper Johns who hung out here with pals like Merce Cunningham, Robert Rauschenberg and John Cage. Needing a space to paint, Johns turned much of the second floor into a double-height studio, which gets glorious natural light from a combination of skylight, windows, and unique floor-to-ceiling windows that roll up like garage doors. He gave the rest of the house a similar mid-century, open plan treatment while adding a long deck and keeping the rustic features of the barn -- like worm-eaten, old exposed beams, rusted, iron barn hardware, and wood paneled walls. Since the house is 90 some years old, and has not been owned by millionaires (except for Jasper Johns but that was later) it is in places. Think "Grey Gardens" rather than "Better Homes and Gardens." The house sits against a hill on a lot of 1.29 acres. It is bounded by an old stone wall and a meandering stream, and is surrounded by ancient trees and rather undisciplined bracken. Are you familiar with the 19th century illustrator Arthur Rackham? It's tangled and viney, like that. The wild, rustic look has attracted many fashion photographers. Clients have included Vogue Australia, True Lingerie, Ilana Kohn, Sea-New York, Steven Alan, L'Officiel and Manifesto magazines, Republic Records, and Astralwerks, a division of Universal Music Group. IF YOU REQUEST TO BOOK: Please give me a description of your project, including the size of your crew, what type and number of vehicles, and a general description of equipment you will be using. Do you plan to dress the set or rely on extant furniture and props? (My original mid-century props alone justify a much higher fee.) Will you be shooting primarily outside or inside? UPDATE: I am open to negotiation on month or months-long, live-in, "residency" type rentals (I would not be there) when a crew needs to occupy a place, to "live in." I've never done that before so we'd need to negotiate a fee Also, if you are doing a music video, I'd like to know whether you will need to play live music or not. It's not necessarily a deal-breaker but I'd like to know

The locker room is a 1030 square foot set of 8 colorful, set-designed rooms available for photo and video shoots. The rooms, located beneath a church, were abandoned in the 1970s. From October 2018 through April 2019, the space was renovated and is now available for your use. Thus, the look of the space is raw and industrial. Most of the floors are concrete. The bathroom and shower room are tiled. Many of the walls have flaking paint jobs and weathered areas. There's exposed piping, wood beams, and unique materials and textures everywhere. The Shower Room has four brutal, beautiful vintage black shower stalls with working water spouts. The front door has a speakeasy style password window. The space lets in very little daylight. The main doorway to the space can let in daylight, if left open. This allows photo and video work to have total control over the lighting. The bathroom has a window to outside which can be easily blocked. The space is equipped with a 12,000 BTU Fujitsu wall AC unit to keep you cool in the summer. We have two 5600W Dr. Infrared DR-988 space heaters to keep you warm in the winter. There are newly installed power outlets in every room, each with two three-prong 110 volt sockets. The rooms are equipped with a total of 15 Phillips Hue bulbs, which can be modified to any color or warm or cool white light, along with a range of brightness levels. The space is provided at our default colors in the photos, and for an additional fee, you may rent a tablet which controls the bulb settings. The space is equipped with a powerful WIFI network. Please be careful with our set and props. Some decorations, such as the vines and the balloon tent, are embedded in the room and cannot be taken down or moved. Renters are able to safely store their equipment in the space overnight. The space is open from 3:30pm to midnight on Sundays, and from 4am to midnight on the other six days of the week. We regret that at this time, our space does not offer wheelchair access. The locker room is located on Bushwick Avenue near the Halsey J and Gates J stations, and a 12 minute walk from the Myrtle Wyckoff L / M station.

Pros and Cons of Music Videos in New York

A music video space in New York might be just what you’re after, but there are some drawbacks to consider before committing to any location. Just like with any city, the Big Apple comes with good parts and bad parts.

  • All four seasons
New York is one of the cities where you can experience all four seasons. The fall and spring tend to be shorter than summer and winter, but you can still enjoy each season as it comes.

  • A melting pot
Another big draw of NYC is how much of a melting pot it is. There are people from 180 countries who call the city home, and over 800 languages are spoken. This type of diversity is also represented in the food, music, and culture.

  • The city that never sleeps
Considering New York has been nicknamed the city that never sleeps, it’s no surprise there’s something going on all the time. You’ll be able to explore the city anytime you want since most public transport is 24/7. On top of that, the city has recently made efforts to be safer so people can feel better about walking around at night.

  • Airports
If you’re planning to travel out of New York, then you’ll be able to find numerous airports. Many of them have direct flights, which can make traveling easier. Given the number of airports in the city, it shouldn’t be hard to find whatever flight you need.

  • Public transport schedules
The public transportation network in New York is vast, but if you rely on it to get around then you have to deal with the schedule they run on. Locals sometimes have trouble keeping up, and there are times the subways or buses may suddenly be down. In addition, the subways aren’t heated or cooled, which can become uncomfortable.

  • Compact spaces
Hanging out in a big group in NYC can prove difficult. There are many restaurants and similar places that are compact and have limited seating. It’s not impossible to go out with a large group, but you will have more limited options of where you can go.

  • Wait times
No matter where you go in New York, or when, you can expect to face pretty long wait times. There are crowds everywhere, even in the middle of the night, so a quick trip to pick up food or groceries can turn into a few hours.

Famous Locations in New York

  • Ellis Island
If you decide to take the ferry to the Statue of Liberty then you can take it to the second stop, Ellis Island. The main building has a museum with exhibits, walls of photos, and historical documents. Visiting Liberty Island and Ellis Island usually takes at least half a day, so it’s important to plan accordingly.

  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art
One of the top attractions in New York is the Metropolitan Museum of Art, usually just referred to as the Met. It was created in 1870 and today is home to some of the best art collections in the world.

  • Brooklyn Bridge
Visitors in NYC can walk the Brooklyn Bridge to get from Brooklyn to Manhattan. There are breathtaking views of both boroughs. It was completed in 1883 and is one of the longest suspension bridges in the country.
