Pros and Cons of Video Studio Spaces in New York

There are many reasons why New York is truly special—iconic landmarks, arts & entertainment, diverse culture, the nightlife! Following are a few things to think about before booking a video studio.

Advantages

  • New York has many readily accessible production studios, high-quality equipment, and resources for rent. You’ll find everything you need for your filming shoot locally.
  • With its recognizable landmarks and popular locations like the Brooklyn Bridge and Times Square, you have a famous backdrop that will add visual appeal to your project.
  • New York is home to many actors, directors, cinematographers, and film workers, which means you can easily recruit talent for your video shoot. You might also get the chance to network with industry professionals, which might be useful for you in the long run.

Disadvantages

  • Crowded streets and heavy traffic can be challenging and time-consuming to navigate if you're transporting equipment and securing permits. Some video studio rentals already have equipment included, which might mitigate the equipment transport concern.
  • New York is expensive—permits (if required), hiring local talent, hotels, and transportation can be costly. You really have to conduct a thorough research beforehand for affordable studios and equipment without sacrificing quality.
  • The round-the-lock energetic atmosphere in New York can create steady background noise, making it difficult to capture clear audio and shots. With Giggster, you can find video studios that face away from busy streets or soundproof soundstages where your crew can film in peace.

Planning Your Video Shoot in New York

A successful video shoot doesn't just happen—behind every polished music video or short film are creative people and lots of time spent on heavy planning and ironing out mistakes. These basic planning tips from Giggster will help you get off to a good start.

Create a Budget – To ensure that you don’t overspend, it’s wise to set a reasonable budget. Shooting location, equipment, permits, talent, and any post-production costs should be included.

Vet Locations – Although Giggster has 1817 filming locations in New York, they get reserved quickly—search and secure your favorite place as soon as possible.

Obtain Permits – A permit may not be needed for casual filming. Some kinds of equipment, vehicles, weapons, or stunts might require a permit for commercial videos. You can review the Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) website to learn about the specific requirements.

Use Local Providers – Eliminate the hassle of taking all your equipment to the shoot location. New York has many rental businesses that provide cameras, lighting, accessories, and other video filming equipment. Also, on Giggster, you’ll find that many locations provide some of this equipment for you.

How to Save Money on Your Video Shoot in New York

While New York is an expensive area, you can still carry out a successful shoot in the city by researching affordable locations, equipment providers, and talent. With studios that can be rented for as low as $20/hour, Giggster can help you save money and stay within your budget.

Can you shoot during off-peak times or seasons?

The off-peak seasons in New York are typically during the winter months, from January to early March. Also, since August is usually hot and humid, there’s less tourism, so you can also take advantage of that. During these times, you can usually find cheaper flights, hotels, and other necessities you'll need for your video project.

What kind of talent do you need?

Form your creative team by hiring film students who want to gain experience, and keep your crew small. This can significantly reduce the cost of labor and catering. Also, you might not need to hire an entire production company. Utilize job forums and online film communities to find freelance film workers who charge reasonably.

Has your video shot list been created?

Map out what will occur and what will be used for a specific shot or scene. This will help you identify the type and quantity of video shoot locations you’ll visit or rent. A shot list helps you use your filming hours effectively, saving you money. Also, more time in one location can prevent you from purchasing accessories that might not be needed.
