Famous Locations in New York

  • Hare Krishna Tree
Even though it is not adorned with any visible religious symbols, the Hare Krishna Tree in New York City's Tompkins Square Park holds tremendous significance for practitioners of Hare Krishna. The tree became sacred to many people after the mantra was recited aloud in public for the first time in America. The tree is also a beautiful American elm, which has become increasingly rare due to Dutch elm disease. People who pass by often stop to bow out of respect. Every October 9th, followers of Hare Krishna celebrate at the tree.

This nine-foot vast building between Commerce and Morton Streets in New York City is the city's narrowest and a Landmark Preservation Committee-named location. Despite its size, it stands three stories tall and has housed many famous individuals throughout its history, including Cary Grant, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Margaret Mead, and William Steig. This picturesque house from 1873 sold for $3 million, proving that sometimes good things come in small packages. If you're meandering through Greenwich Village anytime soon, don't forget to swing by and look at this one-of-a-kind building.

  • Tompkins Square Temperance Fountain
Dr. Cogswell, a well-known temperance activist, was enthusiastic about furthering the cause and commissioned three public fountains in various cities - Tompkins Square being one. The fountain is designed with an intricate drinking fountain for passersby and an inscription that reads "Presented by Henry Cogswell Teetotaller," intending those seeking refreshment to select water over alcohol. The fountain in Tompkins Square Park has witnessed countless political protests and riots, symbolizing social activism for many. For some, it also reminds them of America's long struggle for temperance reform.
