Large, quiet apartment in a central area with easy load-in access and an elevator that brings you straight to the space. Suzanne and her team were incredibly helpful throughout the entire process, from our scouts through the actual shoot day. We had to move furniture around to make space for our shoot, and Chelsea led the whole rearrangement in a way that accommodated all of our gear. Thanks for everything!

We recently booked the Cre8tive Space for a film production and it exceeded our expectations. The host was incredibly responsive and accommodating, ensuring all our needs were met promptly. The space appeared exactly as advertised, providing the perfect backdrop for our shoot. Highly recommend!

The Shepherd Guest House was a great location to shoot my student film. While the spaces are tight, the host gave us plenty of space to shoot. I'd recommend reminding everyone to be quiet and still as you can hear the floorboards creak and sounds from outside while recording. Also, the cell phone service was spotty, so bring a portable wifi with you for maximum communication purposes!

This is my second time renting this space and will continue to rent it a few more times. Jon, Isa, and the team have been wonderful. It's not always easy finding such great service in NYC.

Jarrett, was a great host. Super helpful and communicative. The space itself is very beautiful, as good if not better than the photos. Highly recommend renting this space.

Choosing the Right Type of Location for Filming

Any street, building, or structure in the trendy Williamsburg neighborhood can be your next filming location, but you have to look into the narrative and concept. To give you an idea, here are some possible filming spots you can use for your next photo or video shoots.

  • Music Halls and Theaters – Create Stories on and off the Stage. We often associate a music hall or a theatre with live music or performances, but they also make dramatic spots for filming, whether it’s for a music video, feature film, or even a documentary. It could be a secret meeting scene in a dark, shadowy box seat or a dazzling music showcase of the protagonist with a cheering crowd.

  • Historical Buildings – Where the Past and Present Meet. History, character, intricate interiors, magnificent architecture, and maybe even a little bit of mystery—these and more are what historical structures typically offer. Think of a spooky scene in an old, Gothic-style church or a period piece set in one of Williamsburg’s impressive Victorian mansions.

  • Restaurants and Cafes – Dine in, Film on. Use a classic diner for late-night conversations or a bright café for a modern vibe. Lucky for you, Williamsburg, New York, has plenty of dining spots that will welcome your film crew for any project you’re making.

  • Modern Studios – Make the Impossible Possible. Have you got a specific look in mind but can’t seem to find the right spot, or are you filming a difficult scene that’s better shot in a more controlled environment? Modern studios are your best bet with their special lighting, set design, and sound.

  • Natural Outdoor Locations – Let Nature Be Your Main Lead. Even though you can create pretty much any look in a studio, nothing beats the sense of authenticity, realism, and creative freedom that natural outdoor locations provide. The natural beauty and urban landscapes will make any scene stunning on the big or small screen.

Essentials for a Filming Location

Every production has unique location requirements. Although filmmakers want different things, there are a few must-haves they all have in common, and we’ll discuss some of them in this guide.

Is it easy to get to? Lucky for you, Williamsburg, NY, is easy to reach and accessible, especially if you’re coming from Manhattan. Multiple subway lines and the East River Ferry make travel quick and convenient within the area. But what about those outside the central city and in remote, secluded areas? You have to reconsider or plan the logistics well for easy transportation for your film crew and equipment between locations.

Does it look the part? The location should match the tone and mood of the film or scene. For example, a spooky forest or abandoned building for a horror and thriller movie, a cozy home and restaurant for a romance, or a bustling city for an action flick.

How safe is it? Check whether the location is safe for everyone involved. You might have to install additional safety features, especially for tricky sequences or action scenes.

Planning Your Film Shoot

A lot goes into the pre-production process, which is why it takes months and even years to make a single movie. And even after the shoot, there are still numerous steps to take to get the result you want.

Do Your Homework – Let’s say you already have the script ready and are now ready to bring the story to life. If you’ve decided to film in Williamsburg, explore the neighborhood and soak in the atmosphere. Discover what the place has to offer and its features, as well as the popular spots and hidden gems. Use Giggster to find filming locations to rent and visit them in person to get a feel of the space.

Get Permits – You'll need a permit to film in New York City. The Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment (MOME) is the place to go for all the details. Before you reach out, it'll be helpful to have a good idea of where you want to film and what your project is all about.

Budget Check – Making a film or even a short music video isn’t cheap. There are location fees, equipment rentals, permits, crew costs, and other expenses to factor in, so set a budget and stick to it to avoid spending more than you should.

Gather Your Crew – Williamsburg can be a little tricky to get around, so hiring a local crew is a great idea. Not only can it save you some money, but they also know the area like the back of their hand and can help with all the logistics and finding the best local spots.

Filming Expenses to Plan For

As you probably know, filmmaking means investing money, especially if you want it to look great and appeal to people. Before jumping in, it’s a good idea to get a sense of what the costs might be so that you know what to expect.

Everything about the location.

When it comes to location expenses, it’s not just about the space rental. You also have to budget for travel to the location for your crew and the equipment and the necessary permits. The good news is that Williamsburg filming locations start as low as just $17/hour, perfect for filmmakers on a budget.

Casting calls and talent fees.

If you need the best actors that suit the role and a team that can help breathe life into the story you want to create, you must be willing to spend more. Also, have you considered the costs for casting calls and audition spaces?

Do you have production insurance?

Production insurance should be one of your non-negotiables. Things happen, and something could quickly go wrong, so you need it to protect yourself and your crew.
