This was a remarkably easy experience. The host was very responsive and very supportive. I honestly can't say enough about how helpful and positive she was. The space itself worked beautifully for our purposes and, again, the host was so understanding of our need to cover her windows for a night shot and to move a few pieces of furniture into another room. Although we weren't a huge crew we were using 5 lights for a few shots and the electricity in the apartment supported our needs (as long as we were careful to use extension cords to spread the circuit demands). We used the sofa area of the living room extensively, plus the refrigerator end of the kitchen (we were able to get coverage from both angles) and the bedroom. The bed, especially, looks gorgeous on screen! Truly I feel very lucky that the host allowed us to use this location and I highly recommend it for future shoots!

  • Make sure you have all the necessary permits. Filming in public spaces requires permission from local businesses or government offices. You can also consider obtaining a permit from the Mayor's Office of Citywide Event Coordination & Management for larger-scale productions.

  • Consider hiring experienced locals who can help navigate this process as well as assist in the actual production. They know the ins and outs of filming in Bushwick and can help you avoid any unforeseen issues during the shoot.

  • Always scout out your locations beforehand so there are no surprises on production day—you don’t want any unexpected complications arising when you’ve assembled a crew and equipment. Check out what’s available at each location, such as power sources, access points for lights and sound gear, etc., and make sure there are no obstacles or restrictions that could impede your effort.

  • Budget accordingly by estimating costs for equipment rental, transportation fees (if needed), insurance policies (for crew members), food expenses (if catering is needed), etc., so that there aren’t any financial surprises down the line.
