The space was incredible. Very large! Exactly as presented in the listing. Would highly recommend.

Extremely well equipped, with 3 distinct built-in sets that were much more useful than we anticipated! Setup and lighting was a breeze. We didn't use the paper backdrops, but they looked nice. The C-stands and the lights were so perfect, we didn't need to bring any of our own. Only caveats: the view out the window is of the gross Newtown Creek, so you probably won't want to shoot anything out of them. Sound recording was also challenging, as the walls are not soundproofed, and the photo session in the next room was quite loud. That said, if you're doing a still photo shoot, I can't imagine a better place. The owner was very responsive and polite. My photographer will definitely be using this venue again! PLEASE NOTE: If you book here, pay close attention to the address in the message from the owner, as the one in Giggster may be wrong. (The owner has tried to change it but not been successful.) The neighborhood is right, but it's around the block.

I needed a space on short notice for a family photoshoot and luckily I found this venue. Maciek responded within an hour of me submitting my request! Moreover, on the day of the family photoshoot he met us outside the venue, and acclimated us and the photographer to the space. The space is just as advertised. The plants are on wheels so it made setting up the scene for the photographs a breeze. Also there is an elevator to assist with loading and unloading equipment and there are two bathrooms which were clean. Overall, I’m happy with the space, and would highly recommend to anyone needing a venue for a Photoshoot.

Pros and Cons of Photo Shoots in Brooklyn

Suppose you've really liked a property and you're dying to book it, you'd better make sure that Brooklyn itself is a good fit for you beforehand!

Advantages

  • There's certainly no lack of picturesque locations in Brooklyn, from the Grand Army Plaza and Sunset Park to Brooklyn Heights Promenade and Coney Island Beach if you want to take a quick snap.

  • It's much cheaper to rent out an all-inclusive studio space in the heart of Brooklyn than a Washington Street mansion in Manhattan.

  • The excellent public transport system means that it's no trouble getting around without a car.

Disadvantages

  • You shouldn't even think about driving or trying to find a parking space. We promise that it's easier to haul your stuff around on public transport!

  • The hustle and bustle of the streets makes it hard to take some quick solitary pictures against a pretty background.

  • Commercial shoots need a permit. Better look into applying for one well in advance of your shoot!

The Best Type of Venue for Your Photo Shoot in Brooklyn

From wedding photos to high school graduations or a fashion magazine spread, there are dozens of reasons for a photo shoot. Depending on the occasion, you can make use of any of Giggster's 1681 venues in Brooklyn. They'll set the stage.

Studio – The Perfect Backdrop. Given their colorful backdrops, large windows that allow in plenty of sun, and otherwise flawless lighting, there's a reason that studios are still the number one photo shoot location. Just get your subjects settled in and set the scene.

Mansion or Home – Guaranteed Privacy. NYC's houses and mansions make excellent backgrounds for great photos! Think of the beautiful foliage during an autumn pregnancy shoot for an October baby or the holiday light over the house facade for a family greeting card. For a little extra charm, capture the cobblestone streets in Brooklyn's historic neighborhoods.

Bar or Restaurant – Dynamic Settings. The Brooklyn side of New York City is known for being artsy and trendy and hence bars abound. Whether you're for cozy French bistros or a bar in a historic building, you'll find any kind of aesthetic you want.

Rooftop – Photo Shoots with a View. Where else would you get that perfect shot of the NYC skyline than from a Brooklyn rooftop? Attached to bars, penthouses, or just available for rent on their own, these can be grungy and cool for music video stills or elegant and tasteful for wedding photos.

Warehouse or Loft – Wide Open Spaces. If there's one thing New York City doesn't lack, it's warehouses and open-concept lofts. Get a shot of the iconic Brooklyn Bridge through the floor-to-ceiling windows and use all that space to set up your lighting and lenses at different angles.

How to Plan a Photo Shoot in Brooklyn

You won't be surprised to know that a photo shoot requires way more preparation than just aiming your camera and taking a random picture. But if you're organized about it, you've already got a leg up.

Decide on Concept Doing a bridal shoot during the autumn with fall foliage in the background? You might want to time your shoots for the golden hour. Having a concept in mind can help you pick everything, from the venue to the proper equipment.

Find the Location You've got to consider a variety of things when it comes to locationnot just the floor space and the amount of room but also things like the quality of light and whether it's on a main street so you can get all your equipment delivered safely.

Prepare Your Equipment You'll need to acquire and carry around a lot of stuff for your shoot. Whether you want the clean photographs of a DSLR or a handheld light meter to gauge the quality of your shots, you'll need to pack them up carefully. If you're in a neighborhood with a subway stop, you can make use of public transport or use your car to transfer equipment.

Experiment with Atmosphere There's always a lot of improvisation at a photo shoot. Doesn't matter how detailed your plans aresome ideas just won't work. See if you can make use of props or costumes that are easily available. You can even put on some music and let your subjects get a feel for it as they pose.

Make Your Subjects Comfortable This brings us to our last pointmost subjects of a photo shoot aren't professional models. They might be camera shy and you'll have to ease them into the process. Engage them in talk so they relax. Food and refreshments might help cut the awkwardness.

How to Save Money on Your Photo Shoot in Brooklyn

Despite all the preparations that need to go into it, there's no reason that a photo shoot would be absolutely unaffordable. Just with a few small tricks, you could find a perfectly reasonable way of cutting costs.

Can you scout out the locations beforehand?

For one thing, it always helps if you can visit the location beforehand, check out the lighting, furniture, and backdrops, and visualize your shots. That way, you won't be wasting any time on the actual day of the shoot.

Rent whatever equipment you may not have.

You don't need to buy every camera and lens that you'll need and don't have! The abundance of rentals and vendors in Brooklyn and New York in general is probably one of the most convenient things about the city.

Make use of free props whenever possible.

Photography and professional photography at that is about much more than finding the most Instagrammable places in the city. But there's nothing wrong with taking a few aesthetic pictures at free spots. Nature shots at Green-Wood Cemetery or night scenes in front of the famous Jane's Carousel can definitely boost your portfolio!
