Great space, great host, and totally seamless! The space is on a quiet street in the French Quarters. The space is kind of tight depending on your setup needs but the ability to shoot in the common areas was a plus.

Things to Consider for Your Filming in New Orleans

A haven for filmmakers, New Orleans has been the location for uncountable films and TV shows and we understand you want to make your mark there too! But like everywhere, even the Crescent City has pros and cons.

Advantages

  • The architecture and unique look of New Orleans is always a plus and you can film in one of the many French Quarter homes or the famous St Louis Cemetery.

  • And if you're interested in a collaboration, there's certainly no lack of musicians and artists in New Orleans!

  • In your free time, you can explore previous film sites like the Buckner Mansion which was Miss Robichaux's Academy for fans of American Horror Story.

Disadvantages

  • New Orleans is the epitome of the touristy and crowded city and we don't mean only around Mardi Gras.

  • New Orleans means hot and humid summers and that's hard not just on your actors and dancers but even upon the camera and lighting crew.

  • The history of New Orleans makes it the perfect backdrop for grand-scale films but the age of the city means a distinct lack of infrastructure.

What Kind of Venue Can I Rent for Filming in New Orleans?

As we've already established, New Orleans is a dream city for filmmakers and all the colorful, crumbling mansions imbue the city with a lot of life and personality. Thus, all you have to do is comb through Giggster's 144 venues to find historic places and renovated cottages to film at.

Mansions and Cottages – A Vintage Aesthetic. Mansions and Creole cottages certainly aren't lacking in New Orleans and they're exactly what you need to give that authentic New Orleans character to your film. Pick a hotel that lies close to the grand, airy rooms and colorful, elegant facades of these buildings and invoke a bygone era with your videos.

Church – Romantic History. A wedding chapel that actively hosts ceremonies and still encourages filming can be quite the venue. The multiple chandeliers and vintage furniture of a French Quarter wedding chapel will definitely make for a unique sight on the big screen or small screen.

Bars and Restaurants – Unique Settings. These can be the perfect backdrop to any number of videos, from music and dance videos filmed in a bar or a lounge to a romantic comedy set in a bakery. Look up a chic bakery in the Garden District or a classy Italian restaurant with an outdoor patio.

Outdoor Venues – Green Backgrounds. These scenic filming locations offer you plenty of verdancy and sunlight for those classic outdoorsy shots. From an outdoor pavilion on a farm to a luxurious pool and patio of an estate to greenhouses filled to the brim with all kinds of plants, we've got everything that you might need.

Studio – Modern Conveniences. Not all of the buildings are old and vintage properties. In post-Katrina New Orleans, new buildings with modern amenities have arisen, which include artistic studios with lots of natural light, colorful backdrops, kitschy props, and a designated dressing area. The best place to shoot advertisements or podcasts.

Planning Your Filming in New Orleans

Filmmakers who have been blown away by past movies like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and 12 Years a Slave filmed in Louisiana in general and New Orleans in particular will want to come to the city in search of filming locations. But there's way more to filming than just picking out a location!

Prepare a Script – Having a script in place is obviously the first step since that will help you decide on the number and kind of locations that you might need. The more work you put into the script beforehand, the more efficient your actual day of shooting.

Scout Out Locations – Try to arrange to check out the locations prior to the actual day of shooting so that you can visualize your shots and know how to frame them. Things like the angle at which the afternoon light pours in through the window and whether the furniture will clash with the costumes are things you need to know!

Obtain Necessary Permits – Alas, this is a necessary evil of filming! From permits to do commercial shoots in public locations to food and beverage licenses, there are a lot of hoops to jump through so your filming doesn't get shut down.

Deal with Logistics – This can mean anything from arranging hotel bookings, and travel schedules, running around last-minute to get necessary props, or contacting musicians who can provide you with the music for your video. And of course, you can't do everything yourself! This is where you start delegating to your team.

How to Save Money on Your Filming in New Orleans

Yes, New Orleans is a cheap city in comparison to bigger places like LA or NYC. But that doesn't mean that filming isn't an expensive process in itself. So here are some tips you can consider to cut down on unnecessary costs.

Try to cut down on the number of locations.

Instead of crisscrossing the city and trying to film at multiple locations, try to find a studio or private estate where you can shoot different scenes in one place. Improving efficiency to complete it in one day will help you out further!

Make use of local artists.

You've already got the advantage in that you're in one of the most cultural, musical, and artistic cities in the world. Suppose you're shooting a music video and you need dancers or a musician for an advertisement, make use of New Orleans artists instead of flying in and putting up someone at a hotel.

Try to implement free props.

New Orleans isn't lacking in either interesting architecture or natural beauty. Something like the elegant and graceful facade of a mansion that can be accessed from the street or a still lagoon in the middle of nowhere makes for excellent backgrounds without you having to pay through your nose for them.
