The location was awesome for our photo shoot and was very easy to find. The lighting was really good due to the large windows and the cyc wall was perfect for the look we wanted to achieve. It was very easy to get in contact with the host when we arrived and get a quick rundown of what to expect from the space and booking. Although we did not use the fire escape area I would definitely book this location again just for that feature. Great space and I will be coming back for my future clients

Selena was super responsive, always responded within 30 mins which was so helpful! The space itself was easy to get to (across from metro) and easy to find parking if you drive. The space was beautiful, ample natural light from windows, and Selena allowed us to use whatever we could to do our photoshoot, and was super accommodating. It was perfect and I would def use it again.

Pros and Cons of Photo Shoots in Washington DC

When it comes to a city itself, it always has some pros and cons. So before you go ahead and book a venue, take a look at Washington DC's best and worst traits.

Advantages

  • Unique architecture and aesthetics like the row houses of the city and the National Capitol columns make DC a photogenic place.

  • There's no lack of outdoor spaces and verdant parks with the United States National Arboretum, Rock Creek Park, and the National Mall being some of the examples.

  • Public transport is reliable and clean so it'll be easy for you to zip around the city while looking for the perfect shots.

Disadvantages

  • It can get extremely touristy during certain months of the year so if you're thinking of staging part of your photo shoot in front of the Lincoln Memorial or the Thomas Jefferson Memorial, think again!

  • Muggy summers and occasionally harsh winters can suck the joy right out of a photo shoot. Engagement photos where the couple are sweating or turning blue certainly aren't ideal.

  • It's one of the most congested cities in the US when it comes to traffic and many venues might not come equipped with a parking garage.

The Best Type of Venue for Your Photo Shoot in Washington DC

If you're looking for a wonderful location, airy and well-lit and full of interesting architectural features and knick-knacks for your next photo shoot, then Washington DC, with some of the most colorful buildings in the United States, might well be the place for you. Look through Giggster's 350 venues!

Studios – Excellent Lighting and Equipment. This is of course a traditional setting for any kind of portrait, fashion, or product shoot. And why not? After all, the large windows that let in plenty of natural light, carefully created dressing areas and the blank backdrops that allow your creativity to shine are reason enough for you to come back to these studios again and again.

Private Homes/Mansions – Height of Luxury. Who wouldn't want engagement photos on the boating dock on the Potomac River with a contemporary mansion in the background? On the other hand, you can enjoy gorgeous architecture on a smaller scale at a historic Victorian home in the heart of DC.

Rooftops – Fantastic Views. Apart from the views that the city's skyline offers, if you can time your photo shoot for cherry blossom season in March and April, you're sure to get some amazing shots! The rays of the sun early in the morning or the somber mood of the evening can elevate your photos to another level.

Restaurants – Combine Business and Fun. While not iconic locations, the restaurants of Washington DC have their own kind of classic elegance. A family photo shoot or wedding shoot in a classy Mediterranean restaurant or vintage restaurant located in the Singer building is quite eye-grabbing.

Lounge/Club Rooms – Versatile Locations. These lounges and club rooms that can be found all over DC are excellent for corporate shoots especially. A sky lounge with checkered floors or a cabana-style lounge with outdoor seating can be immensely useful.

How to Plan a Photo Shoot in Washington DC

Planning a photo shoot is about much more than aiming at one of the many DC locations that all tourists congregate in front of and click. Taking it step-by-step can stop it from becoming an overwhelming affair.

Develop a Concept – Having a theme in mind is always helpful instead of making it up as you go along. This can be as simple as a stylistic choice. You can pick out an old movie or book series you want to emulate, pick a venue with black-and-white floors, and try for a vintage-style shoot.

Pick the Location – Once you've decided on a theme and made a mood board, finding a location that fits your aesthetic is that much simpler. You've also got to take the price of the venue into account and make sure that you won't need to scrimp on other areas, such as, for example, an experienced model.

Make Your Subjects Comfortable – Finding a model or subject beforehand and communicating to them clearly what you need helps in the long run! If they're not comfortable with you off-camera, their discomfort will show on-camera. Even a background change can throw the subject off so make sure they know what's going on.

Experiment and Adjust Whether you're planning day or night photography, playing around with the setting and the photographs is an important aspect of capturing the perfect moment! Sometimes it's not even a scripted moment. A good idea would be to experiment with different poses or expressions!

Saving Money on a Photo Shoot in Washington DC

While we understand that everyone has their favorite locations in Washington DC, if you're shooting on a budget, there are a variety of different things to consider. It's possible to conduct a photo shoot cheaply!

Can you get friends and family to pose as models?

Suppose you're trying to build up a portfolio and you need portrait or lifestyle shots. Why don't you try asking some of your family and friends to model for you instead of reaching out to a modeling agency? Just be clear with them about what you need.

Use locations that don't require permits.

Yes, the US Capitol Building or the Lincoln Memorial might be popular but they also require permits for commercial shooting. On the other hand, you can shoot at various indoor studios or homes without requiring a permit and all the expenses that entails.

Can you rent equipment for your photo shoot?

Whether you're doing portraits or a product shoot, all of these things require different kinds of cameras and lenses. There's no need to buy a new mirrorless camera or a wide-angle lens for this one instance. Rather, try renting the equipment from various photography rental stores.
