I highly recommend this location, we had a fantastic experience. Joanna is welcoming and very accommodating to those renting the location. We were able to see the location ahead of the shoot and when we arrived on shoot day, Joanna let it be known if we needed anything they would be available for help! Once we were done with a greetings and a final look at the location Joanna left us to it and we went about our business. Very worth it!

Great space, very unique. Lots of different rooms for shooting and staging, and you're able to move things around, as needed. We were able to fit about 11-12 cars snug in the back lot and along the side of the building. Other street parking is available. Site rep is easy to work with. Be aware that they'll let you come scout twice for free, but then will charge for each additional scout.

Bonnie, the homeowner of this location, was nothing but incredibly helpful and flexible throughout our entire process – this includes the scouting, planning, prepping and shooting. It felt more like a collaboration with the homeowner than it did just renting a home for the shoot as she shared our enthusiasm and excitement for the process. At many points she went the extra mile to help us out and show her desire to assist us in making our vision a reality. The home itself is beautifully maintained to preserve a vintage look and feel, but done with such taste and not at all overly kitschy, which can often happen within this style of interior design. It is tastefully curated with very interesting visual pieces throughout. The many different rooms and bathrooms provided so many locations both for shooting as well as areas dedicated to departments like hair/makeup and wardrobe, talent holding, etc. Also, the variety in furniture allowed so many different ways of shooting, making the house seem even larger on screen. All in all, our experience in the home and with Bonnie was nothing short of spectacular and would absolutely recommend!

Pros and Cons of Film Shoots in Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara is an ideal location for film shoots due to its diverse landscape and wide range of attractions, perfect for any movie or television production. While Santa Barbara offers many advantages for filmmakers, there are also some potential drawbacks that should be considered before shooting in the area.

Advantages

  • Santa Barbara is home to some stunning natural landscapes, from rolling hills covered in lush green vegetation to secluded beaches with miles of soft white sand. You can easily find breathtaking locations no matter what setting you're looking for.

  • Santa Barbara boasts an array of cultural attractions which can add interesting elements to any production. Visitors will have plenty to explore, from museums to vibrant nightlife scenes, during their downtime.

  • The city has many services, such as restaurants, hotels, equipment rental companies, transportation options, and more, making it easy to plan a shoot without having to leave town.

  • Santa Barbara is conveniently located close to Los Angeles, making it easy for crews from other cities or states to reach the area when needed.

Disadvantages

  • Depending on the project you’re working on and your chosen location, securing permits can become quite expensive in Santa Barbara due to strict regulations around filming in certain areas.

  • Although there are sunny days most of the year, unforeseen weather conditions such as heavy rain or fog could potentially delay shoots if not accounted for ahead of time.

  • Popular tourist spots such as Stearn’s Wharf may be challenging to film due to the large crowds and heavy traffic that come with being a top destination spot.

  • With all its beauty, areas like San Ynez Valley may not provide enough diversity when the setting calls for something different than what’s naturally found within the region.

Tips on How to Organize Film Shoots in Santa Barbara

Organizing a film shoot in Santa Barbara can be an exciting and rewarding experience for the cast, crew, and viewers. But like any project, it comes with a set of challenges you need to overcome to obtain success. Here are some tips to help make your production process smoother and more successful:

  • Research the area: Before starting filming in Santa Barbara, it’s important to research the local laws, regulations, customs, and culture of the area. From securing permits and other documents to understanding any restrictions on noise or filming times, doing your research will help ensure that you have a seamless shooting experience.

  • Secure locations: Santa Barbara offers a wealth of potential shooting locations, from white sandy beaches to rustic mountain trails, so it pays off to take your time scouting for potential sites ahead of time. Look into existing filming sites near your location or reach out to local businesses that may be willing to rent their spaces for shoots. Doing this ahead of time will save you time and money during the actual shoot day.

  • Make sure you know all applicable permits: Depending on the type of filming you’re doing—whether outside or indoors—there may be different permits required for production in Santa Barbara County. Make sure these are all taken care of before heading into production day to avoid any unwanted delays or costly fines later on.

  • Have an emergency plan in place: When working with larger crews or with expensive cameras or equipment, it’s always best practice to have emergency plans in place should something unexpected happen during the production day. This could involve getting extra insurance coverage for items being used onsite or having emergency numbers readily available should any medical emergencies occur while onsite.

  • Plan according to weather conditions: The weather can often take a turn in California, so it’s important to plan film shoots accordingly. Have contingency plans ready just in case inclement weather (rain/wind) strikes mid-shoot, and always keep an eye on the active weather alerts throughout your production period so you can adjust accordingly if needed.

  • Utilize local resources: If staffing up for a big shoot day feels overwhelming, consider reaching out to local resources such as colleges or universities that offer internships for aspiring filmmakers who may be able to provide support at no cost! Additionally, many cities like Santa Barbara offer tax incentives through their film office, which can also help offset costs associated with productions taking place within city limits.
