About Westlake Village

Westlake Village is a bedroom community in Los Angeles County approximately 40 miles from downtown Los Angeles. This city of 8,300 has the corporate presence of Anheuser-Busch, Dole, and J.D. Power. Within the strip of land that juts to the west from the larger county land mass, this increases the shoreline of Los Angeles County facing south. However, Westlake Village is on the northern edge of this jutted strip bordering Ventura County about 10 miles from the Pacific shore.

In the early 1960s, Westlake was a master-planned community encompassing 12,000 acres that straddled Ventura and Los Angeles counties. Westlake was the pre-eminent definition of suburbanism. Over time, the community on the Ventura side of the line was annexed into the city of Thousand Oaks, and the remaining development on the Los Angeles side was re-incorporated into the city of Westlake Village.

This 1960s planned community remains self-sustaining. The labor base is strong, and the lifestyle supports today’s definition of “live-work-play.” Westlake Village is within the northwestern section of the Santa Monica National Recreation Area with hiking, horse, and off-road trails all within a 10-minute drive to the beaches of Malibu.

Film Shoot Options in Westlake Village

The film shoot options offered by the host owners cover the choices of open studios, residential settings in urban and remote locations, and specialty commercial spaces. The options also include vehicles from the classics, law enforcement, and muscle cars. All aspects of setting and designing a shoot location are offered within the vicinity of Westlake Village.

  • Pre-Production
The support services for the pre-production stage of filming can be contracted within Los Angeles County. The choices of locations, furnishings, and any elements of special effects will be considered local to the film location. The rental agreement for furnishings and equipment can be supplemented to include the talent for lighting and technical planning.

  • Catering
The decision relating to catering services will depend not only on the budget but on the location of the shoot. Whether in a residential, urban, or a remote location, the menu and serving style needs to be able to work for the catering staff and the production team. For outdoor, remote locations, food trucks may be a viable option as this style of service has proven to be a competitor to the traditional definition of catering.

  • Permitting
There are guidelines in place for all filming in Westlake Village. Locations within the city limits require a film permit, and there are no exceptions for educational or other non-commercial purposes. The onus is placed on the production company for the planning of any street closures, and special effects techniques and to liaise with the residents and other city departments. In addition to the permit fee, there will be additional fees for per-day filming and for other city services that may be necessary for the location. The City Manager has the sole discretion of requiring any additional information, and perhaps fees before a permit is issued.

Film Shoot Companies in Westlake Village

Los Angeles is the epicenter of film production, and the companies providing ancillary services to this industry are considered local to Westlake Village. The outsourcing of equipment, furnishings, and labor locally will bring job creation and wage investment into the base economy. The local governmental leadership recognizes the value of filming and the exposure of the attributes and talent of the labor base.

  • Westside Media Group
Based in Santa Monica, this service company has provided turnkey post-production service options to LA County since 1990. Westside Media offers in-house editing rooms and a duplication lab, together with related equipment, for rent. This company has been vetted by the ProductionHUB for the flexibility to accommodate any project budget in the post-production stage.

  • Roaming Hunger
This non-traditional catering service provides a one-stop portal for sourcing the food truck vendors to a film shoot location based on given specifications for the venue, schedule, and budget. The logistics of coordinating the trucks, vendor payment, and service guaranty are handled by Roaming Hunger. The food trucks are chosen like menu options, and payment for the services is held in escrow until the end of the contract. All communications with the food truck owners and the chefs are handled by this host service. Film shoot locations are a proven venue sponsored by Roaming Hunger.

  • Picture Start Props
The furnishing of a set is another important step in establishing the tone and image of the story and brand to insure audience connection. Picture Start Props caters to production companies for supplying stage sets with furniture, décor, and hand props. There are pricing discounts for filmmakers who follow set policies and rules, and flexibility for delivery and return can be tailored to a schedule with delays and early wrap-ups.

Pros and Cons of Film Shoot Locations in Westlake Village

There will be aspects of a film shoot that will not be as advantageous as others. Often, disadvantages will be mitigated when considered with the whole project as opposed to a stand-alone decision. Unless there are extenuating circumstances, there should be no consideration viewed as mutually exclusive from the others.

Advantages

  • 30-Mile Studio Zone
Westlake Village lies within the 30-Mile Studio Zone, a benefit to both the industry and the project budget. Generally, all production work within the zone is considered “local.” This means the budget is not burdened with on-location expenses for the contract labor and crew.

  • Climate
The summers in Westlake Village are warmer and dryer with average high temperatures of about 90 degrees F and low temperatures in the winter are not too cold with low temps above 45 degrees F.

  • Local support of the industry
Given the choices for film shoot locations, it is evident that Westlake Village is accommodating to the film industry. The hosts are owners of homes, businesses, specialty vehicles, and acreage that could be used in various genres.

Disadvantages

  • Competition
The offered film shoot locations are versatile and not location specific. Competition results in higher prices and a tight market.

  • Transportation
Although 40 miles from downtown Los Angeles, the travel time can be as long as four hours if public transportation is the mode of choice. Westlake Village is not served by the LA MetroLink; the closest station is in North Hollywood.

  • Mudslides and fires
The months between May and November are the most prevalent for wildfires due to the dry air and the high winds trapped in the canyons. The charred ground will fuel the potential for mudslides during the rainy winter months.
