We LOVED this space! I would film every shoot here if I could. Emily & Eric's home is absolutely beautiful and already dressed to perfection making it an art department's dream. Emily & Eric are also probably the nicest location hosts I've come across - super communicative and just all around good, genuine people.

Pros and Cons of Courtyard Events in Chicago

Courtyard venues are a nice way to create an intimate and unique environment for hosting a gathering. Whether it be a wedding, corporate event, birthday party, or any other special occasion, there are many advantages to holding such events in Chicago's courtyards. With the city's bustling atmosphere providing a vibrant backdrop for your event, guests can enjoy a private and cozy atmosphere that can't be found anywhere else. However, hosting a courtyard event in Chicago also comes with its own set of drawbacks. Here are some of the top advantages and disadvantages of holding courtyard events in Chicago:

Advantages

  • Intimate atmosphere: The smaller size of most Chicago courtyards provides an intimate setting for any gathering. This allows guests to feel more connected to one another while enjoying the privacy away from the hustle and bustle of downtown life.

  • Unique experiences: Since courtyard venues often have distinct design elements and features, they allow guests to explore something new while attending your event.

  • Easy access: Most Chicago courtyards are easily accessible by public transportation or car. This makes it easy for guests to get around without worrying about parking or traffic delays.

Disadvantages

  • Size restrictions: While the intimate size of courtyard venues may be great for small gatherings, larger groups may not find them ideal since space is limited.

  • Weather unpredictability: Unpredictable weather conditions can present issues when holding an outdoor event in a courtyard venue due to the lack of available indoor space during inclement weather.

  • Cost: Courtyard venues may charge steep rental fees, which can add up quickly depending on the specific venue's policies. This makes them slightly more expensive than other options available in Chicago.

Tips on How to Organize Courtyard Events in Chicago

Organizing any event, especially in a courtyard venue, can be overwhelming. Here are some tips on planning your Chicago courtyard event to ensure it goes smoothly on the day itself:

  • Budget: Before selecting your venue or vendors, clearly define your budget. You must determine how much money you have to work with so you don't overspend or find yourself unable to afford services at the end of the planning process. Estimate general costs for catering, decorating, and rentals, then compare them with what is allocated in your budget so you can adjust accordingly.

  • Research: Find out all you can about the space by visiting in person or researching online if a visit isn't possible. Confirm there's enough room for guests and understand any restrictions on noise level, time of day/night events may begin or end, and any other limitations the venue has.

  • Food Options: Depending on whether you want a more casual or formal affair will dictate what type of food option you offer guests. If it's an informal gathering, consider providing small bites or large shared platters for everyone to enjoy. For something more upscale, look into higher-end caterers who offer multicourse meals with beverage pairings and other luxuries like custom desserts and handcrafted cocktails.

  • Atmosphere: Think about the atmosphere you would like to create for attendees when selecting decor elements for your event space. Consider items like furniture rental pieces such as chairs and benches, as well as linens for tablescapes or even customized signs that reflect the theme of your event. You don't want to go overboard but make sure it looks inviting.

Famous Locations in Chicago

  • Chicago Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium
The Chicago Municipal Tuberculosis Sanitarium was built in 1909 to help address the problem of tuberculosis in Chicago. The facility was designed to treat patients with the disease and educate the public about tuberculosis. The sanitarium was located on the south side of Chicago and included a hospital, an outpatient clinic, and a research laboratory. It was closed in 1974, and the facility is now used as a senior citizen's home. The building is a historic landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • North Avenue Baths Facade
The North Avenue Baths were built in 1908. Its striking Beaux Arts facade was designed by architect Clarence H. Ward and faced a busy street corner near the northwest side neighborhood. The grandiose building housed a swimming pool, locker rooms, steam rooms, and a gymnasium. It was a popular destination for Chicagoans looking to stay fit and relaxed. However, the bathhouse closed its doors in the early 1990s due to financial difficulties. Today, the building is used as a loft apartment. Although it is no longer a functional bathhouse, the North Avenue Baths still stand as a reminder of Wicker Park's rich history.
  • Coyote Building (The Robey)
The Coyote Building is a 12-story landmark skyscraper in Chicago, Illinois, located on the northern side of the Chicago River, in the Loop business district. Originally called the North West Tower, it was designed by Chicago architects Perkins, Chatten & Hammond in a distinctive Art Deco style. The building's name comes from its resemblance with a howling coyote, or so some artists thought. The Coyote Building was home to several businesses and offices of professionals. In 2012, it was purchased by a private company and converted into a hotel called The Robey.
