You can’t possibly have a better experience with a location. Karen was supremely helpful and generously accommodating during our booking process trying to figure out the right times and circumstances that worked for us and our schedule. The on site rep was very sweet snd supportive and present to help us get what everything we needed without hovering or being an imposition (as on site reps usually are). The location itself, goes without saying, is beautiful and rich, you can point the camera literally anywhere and you’ll be fine. 10/10 would book again any chance I get!!

About Cathedrals

Cathedral spaces, with their soaring arches and stained-glass windows, offer a majestic backdrop that invokes a sense of wonder and history. Imagine a film set or photo shoot framed by ancient stonework, where every shot is steeped in the ethereal ambiance only centuries-old craftsmanship can provide. The very architecture that has witnessed the passage of time now stands ready to enhance visual storytelling with its grandeur and intricate details.

What is it that event planners and their guests cherish in a cathedral's vast hall? Could it be the way whispers travel up to the vaulted ceilings or how light filters through to create a dance of colors upon the floor? These spaces — once solely domains of worship — now also play host to a variety of prestigious events, from elegant galas to contemplative exhibits, providing an atmosphere that is both inspiring and serene.

When it comes to hosting film or photo shoots, the appeal of a cathedral space lies in its ability to transport an audience to another era or create a mood of solemnity and reflection. Meanwhile, for events, the grandiose setting juxtaposes the ephemeral nature of a gathering with the enduring presence of the surrounding structure. The result? Moments that resonate with attendees long after they've left the venue, amplified by the grandeur and expanse of the space.

The Best Cathedral Spaces

When it comes to hosting an event or organizing a film or photo shoot, few locations can match a cathedral space's grandeur and awe-inspiring atmosphere. Often associated with tradition and sacred history, these structures can bring a certain gravitas and aesthetic beauty to any gathering.

  • Gothic Grandeur
Cathedrals' stunning beauty and intriguing history make them magnificent sites. The ethereal stained glass and soaring ceilings create an unparalleled sense of grandeur and holiness. Playing light via stained glass may enhance events and create a wonderful setting for photos and film. These large venues are ideal for shows and speeches since their acoustics magnify music and speech. However, cathedrals are large and require a lot of work to fill or create intimate gathering spaces. Their historical value may limit modification and decoration.
  • Modern Metamorphosis
Modern cathedrals combine modern architecture with old reverence, making them ideal for contemporary events and shots. Minimalist décor suits a variety of themes in less ornate but nonetheless impressive constructions. These venues are blank canvases for event planners and photographers, but they may lack the character and visual intrigue of historical settings.
  • Unconventional Enclaves
Unbridled creativity is gaining traction in photography and event organizing, leading to an increase in unusual cathedral settings. These unique locations could be industrial cathedrals with exposed beams and brick walls, offering a distinctive and rustic ambiance. These settings can also be highly customizable due to their flexibility. However, because of their industrial design, they might not work with every style or purpose and might need extra lighting and decorating to make the space feel more alive.
  • Outdoor Openness
Moreover, cathedral exteriors don't have to be as majestic as their interiors. For events and photo shoots, outdoor cathedral settings like cathedral gardens and cloisters blend nature and architecture. They combine the beauty of natural lighting and scenery with the majesty of cathedral backgrounds. The presence of plants makes a setting more vivid, and dining al fresco beneath the shade of towering spires can be an extraordinary experience. Nevertheless, because they are exposed to the elements, outdoor venues' suitability for events and projects can be significantly impacted by the weather.

What to Look for in Cathedral Spaces

When seeking the perfect cathedral space for your event or production, specific attributes are essential for a seamless experience. This guide will highlight important factors to consider when selecting a cathedral that meets your specific needs.

  • Space Size and Capacity
Cathedral spaces can range from intimate to expansive. It's crucial to select a venue that accommodates your expected guest list comfortably or provides ample room for the crew and equipment if it's for a shoot. Consider both the standing and sitting capacity, especially for events requiring a reception or seated dining arrangement.
  • Architectural Layout and Ambiance
The architectural design influences your event's ambiance or your shoot's aesthetic. Look for cathedrals with magnificent arches, intricate stained glass, or striking Gothic elements if these features align with your theme or vision. The layout should also facilitate the flow of people and activities – consider aspects such as the altar, aisles, and columns, which may affect sightlines and movement.
  • Regulations and Restrictions
Inquire about policies concerning noise levels, equipment use, and decor alterations. Churches may have restrictions that could impact your event execution or shooting process. Confirm if there are time limitations and whether photography or filming is permitted in all areas, as some sections of sacred sites might be off-limits.
  • Amenities and Accessibility
Analyze the list of amenities such as restrooms, dressing areas, and lighting. Catering to the comfort of your guests or crew is paramount. Evaluate the bar list if you're hosting a social event; ensure it's appropriate for your audience. Accessibility is another vital factor. Check for wheelchair ramps, parking availability, and proximity to public transport to provide easy access for everyone involved.

Cathedral Inspiration

With their lofty spires and hallowed walls, cathedrals are more than places of worship—they are bastions of history and creativity, offering unique atmospheres for various film shoots and events. Here are five specific examples to inspire you.

  • Haunted Histories
A Victorian-era drama series can harness the ethereal presence of a Gothic cathedral. The stone arches and vintage stained glass provide an authentic backdrop for period pieces, where the intricate carvings and eerie corridors set the stage for whispered conspiracies and dramatic revelations.
  • Avant-Garde Fashion Shows
Imagine models walking down the aisle which transforms into a candlelit runway, reflecting off the ancient masonry. An audacious fashion show set in a cathedral creates an extraordinary contrast between the sacred and the modern, between spiritual silhouettes and contemporary designs.
  • Midnight Sonata Film Shoots
For a film that necessitates a blend of mystery and magnificence, the acoustic marvel of a cathedral at midnight, with nothing but the sound of a lone piano resonating through the vast expanse, crafts a hauntingly beautiful scene for a romantic or dramatic movie.
  • Royal Banquet Events
Host an event reminiscing royal feasts, where long tables set within the cathedral's transepts invite guests to dine under soaring vaults. Tapestries and armor can adorn the space, while subtle modern lighting accentuates medieval aesthetics, creating an immersive experience.
  • Historical Documentary Filming
A documentary chronicling the life of a significant historical figure or era can tap into the authentic environment of a cathedral. You can record interviews or recreate events in front of the beautiful ancient frescoes and artifacts as a backdrop. The natural patina of the cathedral walls gives your project a sense of ageless wisdom.
