Historic Building, Bar, Ballroom & Bowling Alley Buy Out
A nonprofit Texas corporation that offers its space to raise funds for the lodges housed within its retro, historical landmark building.
The building has been the setting for hundreds of special occasions throughout the years!
Our historic building was built in 1911and is located in beautiful downtown San Antonio, located on St. Mary's Street on the San Antonio RiverWalk.
The beautiful historic building has strong German roots, and the architecture portrays the detail of the 1938 remodel. The inside is an absolute time capsule.
The building is an historic and beautiful part of San Antonio's history.
From the early pictures of the building to now, its focal point is a beautiful, historical stained glass window of Hermann the Cherusker, created in 1911. Hermann Sons Life members know that Hermann is our chosen namesake because of his leadership and valor.
The upstairs is home to what has been called the best ballroom in the country. The historic Ballroom, with a capacity of 300, is the perfect setting for your special occasion, party or corporate event. Our ballroom has been recently upgraded with new paint and gorgeous refinished hardwood floors while retaining its vintage charm.
Located on the second floor, the room features original hardwood flooring that was recently restored and beautiful Stained Glass art created in 1911 by Helen Ferne Goolsby Slimp. There is a stage for DJs or entertainment, beautiful lighting, bar and catering area, and a large area for dancing.
The rooftop was once home to a grand dance floor, and is in the process of being restored to its former glory. In the 1950s, many dances were held there, and in the 1960s country bands played on the roof, including George Jones. The roof is currently accessible however has small pebble cover on it currently. Decks can be brought in as needed.
On the 2nd floor is a grand hallway, an old meeting room, and a beautiful tileway.
The Bowling Alley was built in 1947, and it was the first Brunswick automated lanes built in the state of Texas. It was quite the technological advancement at that time, and the Hermann Sons, headed up by Fritz Schilo, decided they needed a place to gather and to provide the public with a state-of-the-art bowling alley.
Located on the second floor, the bowling alley is abandoned and no longer open to the public. However, this time capsule is a gem that you can rent for special occasions.
The bowling alley has a bar and a very spacious floor plan. Some of the lanes still function and can be turned on by special request.
We also have our downstairs Rathskeller Bar and reception area available for rent, as well as convenient downtown parking spot rentals.
The bar is an historic old-school bar, with original antique gaming poker tables, a pool table, vintage beer lights, and incredible photos on the wall of days from the past. The bar has a small stage for artists.
The hallway in the basement is a fallout shelter with solid concrete walls.
