Luiz was very helpful and responsive. The space is beautiful and spacious, very comfortable and flexible. We shot interviews and spoken word performance with only minor train (Newark Penn Station is super close by for easy public transit from NYC and northern NJ) and street noise.

Choosing the right location for a music video can make or break a song. And yet this side of the music business is often overlooked. Yes, you have a great song recorded and your choreography worked out, but the wrong venue can make your music video look cheap, amateurish, and uninteresting.

So how do you choose a venue that's going to make your video pop? Giggster has you covered. Our intuitive app lets you find the best locations for any event, including music video production. With rentals to meet all budgets, we can find you a rooftop with a view of Manhattan, a historic house, a party pool, or a dance studio that will make the ideal backdrop to bring your vision to life.

Pros and Cons of a Music Video in Newark

The range of music video locations on offer in Newark makes it a great choice to shoot your next film. But before you start storyboarding, consider the pros and cons.

Advantages

  • The diversity of locations in Newark is one of the biggest selling features here. You could use a dance studio designed for performance, keep it real in an industrial yard, or go for elegance in a historic home. There's no limit except your creative vision.

  • Newark is close to New York, one of the great creative hubs of world culture. That means you can find performers, rent whatever equipment you may need, and soak up the creative atmosphere that will make your production a classic.

  • Newark is more affordable than New York, so you can keep the cost of equipment rentals and venues to a minimum. In many ways, it's the best of both worlds: close enough to New York to have access to all the cultural treasures of the city, but far enough away to be affordable.

Disadvantages

  • Newark is relatively friendly to the film industry, but you may still require permits to shoot your video. Filming at a private location rented through Giggster makes this much easier to navigate, as private venues are often exempt.

  • Newark's weather can be unpredictable, even in summer. A gray day can quickly ruin an outdoor shoot, so keep an eye on weather forecasts and have a Plan B if possible.

  • The city is a busy place, with almost constant traffic, construction noise, and the noise of nearby Newark airport. Be ready for some disruptions in filming, and try to stay patient.

The Best Type of Location for Your Music Video in Newark

The right location can take your music video from average to amazing. With 93 venues in the city, you have almost limitless possibilities for storytelling and atmosphere that will elevate your music and get your message across.

  • Dance Studios – Great Light and Creative Inspiration. If your choreography is important to the video, why not show it off in a Newark dance studio? Tons of natural light and space to move will set off your choreography perfectly.

  • Luxury Mansions – Elegance and Sophistication. Go for glamour with a beautiful Newark mansion that will give your video a high-end feel. You can also rent classic cars that make excellent backdrops for your visuals.

  • Lofts and Penthouses – Modern Styling and City Views. A sleek penthouse will give you that contemporary vibe, and floor-to-ceiling windows can give you great views of the city.

  • Outdoor Spaces – Light and Energy. Parks, gardens, fields, streets, industrial yards—all offer an interesting canvas for your creativity to shine. Root your video in a specific place and let Newark show all its facets in your video.

  • Cars and Buses – Luxury and Style. Shoot your video on a party bus or a hot pink Hummer limousine. Rent a 1937 Rolls-Royce or a vintage 1974 Dodge to give your video a retro feel.

Music Video Location Must-Haves

Every music video is different, but there are some aspects you need to consider before the camera starts rolling. Here are some things to think about before you begin:

Plan Your Shoot. Before you begin, listen closely to the song—more than once. What images does it create in your mind? What kind of atmosphere do the music and the lyrics have? You want to match any location to the vibe of the song itself.

Does the location fit the mood you're trying to convey? Music and lighting can do a lot to change the way a location comes across on camera, but you'll have a much easier time of it if you choose the right scene in the first place. Although there are no hard and fast rules to this, try to choose a location that works with the atmosphere and mood of the song.

Is the location accessible? Depending on the complexity of your shoot, you may have a large team and lots of equipment to transport. If that's the case, you'll want a venue that is easy to reach and easy to find parking.

Planning Your Music Video in Newark, NJ

Every good music video was meticulously planned, even if it doesn't look like it. Yours will be no exception. Think carefully about every aspect of the production to achieve the most professional result.

Stay On Budget – Whether you have a budget in the millions or you're shooting on a shoestring, you need to know how much you have to spend on your video and stick to that. Giggster can help you find an affordable location, but you still have to think about equipment, performers, postproduction, and lots of other costs.

Build Your Team – Making a successful musical video requires the input of lots of different people. You need performers, but also camera operators, someone to handle the lighting, someone to edit the video after it's shot, and so on. These people can determine whether your video goes viral or is completely forgotten, so spend some time building the best team you can.

Get The Right Equipment – Yes, technically your smartphone can film a video, but if you want it to look professional, you'll need specialist equipment. If you can't afford to buy, look into equipment rentals in Newark so that you can update your tools and capture the best possible footage.

Don't Forget About Permits – Shooting in a private location can help you avoid the need for permits, but if you're going to be filming in the streets or parks of Newark, you'll probably need to run it by the local authorities first.

Saving Money on a Music Video in Newark, NJ

Making a music video can cost a fortune. You don't want your video to look cheap, but at the same time, you may have a strict budget to stick to. Here are some ways to save a little bit of money while still keeping production values high:

Avoid permit costs.

Shooting in a private location can help you avoid expensive permits. However, if your vision requires shooting somewhere where a permit is required, note that the City of Newark offers low-cost permitting for budget films. Make sure to apply for your permits well in advance of your shoot to make sure you get them in time.

Keep your crew small.

You can't do everything by yourself, but you can save a lot of money if you can keep your staff small. Focus on the essential things you need help with and try to do more by yourself.

Schedule efficiently.

Don't fall into the trap of thinking you have to shoot your video in chronological order. Maximize your time by shooting all the necessary shots for the video in a single location at one time, then move on to the next. That way, you won't need to read the venue for as long and you can get your video made quicker.
