- United States Customhouse
The United States Customhouse in Houston, Texas was built between 1907 and 1911 to house a post office and courthouse. It was later converted for use as a customs house. At the end of the 19th century, Houston was in competition with Galveston for business. However, this changed when a hurricane hit Galveston in 1900, causing widespread damage and death. This led many businesses to move their operations to Houston, which was seen as a safer option. By 1910, 17 railroads were running between Houston and other towns and cities. The Ramón Castilla sculpture, located in Hermann Park's McGovern Centennial Gardens, is a work by an unknown artist. It was first placed in the International Sculpture Garden in 1991 before being relocated to its current location. President of Peru for four terms, Ramon Castilla initially fought against the Peruvian revolutionaries who were supported by Spain but later switched sides to fight for independence.
