About Morristown

Morristown, New Jersey acts as the seat of Morris County in the state. The city was established in 1740, but the area was known as West Hanover for thirty years before that. It was renamed after the governor of the colony, Lewis Morris. Over ten thousand troops camped in Morristown during the American Revolution, and the spot has since been preserved as the Morristown National Historical Park. The city is only 18 miles away from Newark, New Jersey, and sits on the Whippany River.

The historical park was first opened in 1933. It takes up 2.6 square miles of land and is known for a reconstruction of the soldier encampment called Jockey Hollow. Morristown was connected to Newark by a railroad in the 1830s, allowing the area to flourish as a transportation center. A few famous authors also called Morristown home during the 19th century, including Thomas Nast and Bret Harte. While it is mostly a residential city today, it is also home to the machinery, pharmaceutical, chemical, and cosmetics industries.
