About Los Angeles

Claimed in 1542 by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo and founded in 1781 by Felipe de Neve, Los Angeles was first home to the Tongva and Chumash Tribes and then Spain before being claimed by Mexico in 1821. It was not a part of the United States until it was purchased with the rest of California in 1848.
