About London

London is a vibrant capital with a diverse array of people, cultures and activities. In a city of almost nine million people, you’ll find that no matter what you need in the city, someone will have it. London is also the filming location of a whole host of famous movies, TV shows and videos due to its iconic attractions which provide the perfect backdrop.

From the London Eye and the River Thames to the West End and beyond, there is no shortage of beautiful production locations, whether you’re looking for natural landscapes, historic landmarks or futuristic buildings.

The city is home to many restaurants, bars and shops, so after a busy day of filming, it’s worth spending an hour or two enjoying yourself with a meal or drink in the heart of the city.

Production Options in London

Shooting a production is a big job, and unfortunately, it’s not as easy as just packing up your camera and going. To make sure you and your crew have a fun and, more importantly, successful shoot, you should consider what might make your job easier.

  • Photographers & Videographers
Although it’s likely that you already have photography and videography bases covered, sometimes it’s worth having a backup in case of the unexpected. Whether a member of your crew gets ill, you simply haven’t found the right person yet or you have everything you need but want someone to capture some content for your professional portfolio, hiring a top-class videographer or photographer is an essential part of any production. A helping hand can take it to the next level.
  • Catering
Working on a production is hungry work, and you can be certain that after a morning or afternoon of hard work, everyone’s stomach will be growling for some good food. Luckily, many catering companies specialise in providing excellent, freshly prepared food for film and TV crews. These mobile companies can whip up everything from pizza to a picnic; some even have their food trucks to come to you.
  • Equipment Rental
If you’re not from the capital, carrying heavy equipment to your production location can be a logistical nightmare, increasing the risk of damaging expensive equipment and potentially requiring a large vehicle. Even if you’re from London, carrying cameras, rigs and computers on the tube or bus is not ideal. Equipment rental companies can be a life-saver, loaning you top-notch pieces that might be too bulky for you to carry, too expensive to invest in or simply something you’d forgotten you need. Many of these companies are often able to deliver larger equipment to your production site, saving you time and hassle for a reasonable price.

Production Companies in London

  • Social Films
Social Films is a London-based video production company which has worked with brands including British Airways and HSBC. They provide services for all scenarios, whether you need to hire a videographer or need some post-production and editing help.
  • Rose Catering
A company with more than 30 years of experience exclusively providing food for film and TV crews, Rose Catering are the go-to people for keeping everyone full and happy on set. They have a fleet of catering vehicles meaning they can bring the food to you no matter where you’re filming. They offer breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea, as well as ‘hot boxing’ where they bring piping hot food directly to you under a marquee, without the need for you to have a set base to eat in.
  • CameraWorks
This Shoreditch-based company provides camera, video and lighting equipment rental, monitors and grips as well as audio equipment. They even have staple set pieces such as clapper boards, ladders and colour charts to make sure every aspect of your production from the visuals to the audio is the best possible quality. They offer their own insurance and can deliver equipment within London if you aren’t able to pick it up from their offices.

Pros and Cons of Production Spaces in London

London can be a stunning place for a production at any time of year. However, being in the capital has its drawbacks, and you’ll have to plan carefully to get the best out of your time in the city.

Advantages

  • It’s a year-round city
London in the summer is the best time of year. Long evenings mean you can shoot later in the day for that golden hour light. However, Christmas time is just as pretty, with sparkling lights, bustling markets and cosy pop-ups throughout the city which can give an entirely new atmosphere to your production.
  • There are a lot of choices
London has more production locations than you can shake a stick at. Films set in every era have been shot in the capital. Whether you’re shooting inside or out, you’ll no doubt find the perfect place to bring your creation to life.
  • It’s a hub of talent
If your crew isn’t quite complete, you forgot some props or you realise you might need a firebreather or rollerblader for your show, London is home to millions of people from all walks of life and shops selling a wide and wonderful range of items. You can rest easy knowing you’ll find everything you need.

Disadvantages

  • The weather can be bad
As with most of the country, when the weather is bad in London, it can be miserable. Flat light, rain clouds and soggy air may put a damper on your production, but the good news is it’s usually temporary.
  • It’s extremely busy
Not only will you face crowds of tourists on weekends and sunny days, particularly at popular attractions, but even if you shoot in the morning or evening, you’re likely to come across a rush of commuters and traffic which can hold up your schedule.

Famous Production Locations in London

  • Tower Bridge
An icon on the River Thames and an iconic part of London’s history, Tower Bridge is somewhere not to be missed when visiting the city. Unsurprisingly, it has been used in several blockbuster movies, including Spiderman: Far From Home. Combined with a few hours of seeing the neighbouring Tower of London, you’ll have a fascinating historic day out.
  • Trafalgar Square
Centrally located near Whitehall, the Strand and the Houses of Parliament, this is one of the first places to go to get a taste of the capital. While you’re here, you can see Nelson’s Column and check out the National Gallery, another place featured in a variety of movies such as The Da Vinci Code and Skyfall. It's a short walk to London’s best areas, including Hyde Park and the West End.

  • Buckingham Palace
The official residence of the Queen and used in the film of the same name, Buckingham Palace is a British icon. Strolling past the gates and exploring nearby Hyde Park and Horse Guards Parade is a rite of passage. If you’re lucky enough to attend during the Changing of the Guard or Trooping the Colour, you’ll witness a display of true British values.
