About the Space
One of the extremely rare private backyard gardens on Malibou Lake. Nestled in the Santa Monica Mountains, this lake house location is so private that even your sound person will be happy with how quiet it is! Close enough to the city to be convenient for cast and crew. And yes, the 1955 Lyman wood boat is included in the price! The yard has to be seen to be believed. Fenced on two sides, with a lake on the third side, it is completely private. Xeriscaped with lush, beautiful bushes that flower by season. Large, old trees encase the stone walkway down to the private wood dock as you pass the fountain. The dock is large enough for production setup, and uniquely crafted of wood, concrete and rock around the perimeter. Direct sunlight several hours per day at peak summer, a wonderful, diffused light daylong as the sun arcs south behind the trees. This lake location is upscale and private, perfect for romance, comedy and general Americana.. anything that is set at a lakehouse or lakefront lakeside. The house can be used as a mountain cabin (not just locally, a crew has used it for a Canada cabin because of the foliage) or modern boho chic. Whether you need waterfront (water front) or in house, mountain views or private Malibu garden, this location will not disappoint. We have a full private green room for makeup and talent, a z-rack for wardrobe and great lighting for hair and makeup. IMPORTANT NOTE: The governing body of the lake, Malibou Lake Mountain Club, currently requires a site rep from the club to be present at all production shoots, regardless of the size. The fee for this site rep is $500 per day and must be paid directly to the club (it is not included in our fee). The club requires at least 48 hours to arrange this, please plan accordingly. This is a lake-wide rule, so if you see any other listings at Malibou Lake that do not mention this, be aware that you will still need to pay it, separately, before production. From the very moment we arrived, they went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and cared for. They greeted us with open arms, helping us coordinate parking with ease, giving us a tour of the breathtaking space, and introducing us to their adorable cats. Matt and Crissy were right there with us at every step of the process, ensuring everything was running smoothly, whether it was providing information, assisting with setups, or offering their hospitality in the most thoughtful ways. They even surprised us with delicious fresh-baked cookies and coffee, which was such a delightful and unexpected treat. Seriously—homemade cookies! This type of kindness is hard to come by, and we are eternally grateful to them for providing such a wonderful experience for every member of our team. We were truly blown away. As for the space itself, it truly is a hidden gem. The garden is a photographer's dream, receiving beautiful lighting throughout the day, from sunrise to sunset. The way the greenery casts dappled light at all times creates a magical atmosphere, especially during the afternoon when most places would be battling harsh overhead sun. Here, everything feels peaceful and balanced, making it easy to get perfect shots in any light. The dock was another favorite spot—so peaceful and calming, providing a tranquil escape just steps from the garden. We still can’t believe that this lakeside paradise is just an hour from the city! This place photographs like a dream—every angle, every corner is picturesque and perfect for capturing content. Our entire team left feeling inspired, refreshed, and so grateful for the time we spent there. If you’re looking for a space that offers not only unbeatable beauty but also hosts who go above and beyond to make your experience special, this is it. Matt and Crissy made sure every single detail was perfect, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. 1000/10—we couldn’t recommend this place enough! Wonderful location to use for production! Matt was incredibly accommodating and fully understanding about whatever production needs might be. He goes above and beyond to make sure the shoot is as great as it can be! On the day we were shooting we had issues with noise due to construction happening around the lake, and Matt was able to text the neighbors and coordinate a period of silence for us to get the audio we needed. He was also generous enough to tow/pull one of our actors in the wooden boat with his kayak for certain shots!! Highly recommend renting this location!
