About Sonoma
Sonoma county was originally founded by Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, a military officer, in 1835. It was actually named as the Independent Republic of California’s capital in 1846, although it was only for 25 days. Officer Vellejo’s home still stands in Sonoma and can be visited in the Sonoma State Historic Park. Today the city is popular for its agriculture, tourism, and most significantly, its winemaking.
This city is known as the birthplace of California wine, and today it grows over 60 varieties of grapes. Other than its wine-related attractions, Sonoma offers amazing views by the ocean, in the forest, or on the mountains making it a great place for any nature lover to visit. The city takes advantage of its beautiful scenery by offering hiking, kayaking and other outdoor activities. The county includes 18 appellations, each with a unique geography and climate that plays a part in the taste of the wines made there.
