About the Space

Note: I put a price but please provide more details & a budget so we can confirm a rental price. Gorgeous 1925 MANSION, 24,000 SQ. FT., 7.23 Acres Partially restored 1925 Georgian manor (formerly owned by Vanderbilt). Surrounded by over 7 acres. Tamburlaine Gate invites you onto this Broadhollow Estates property. It has a gated entrance, circular drive, arboretum-like grounds, and is a 29-room mansion. This Great Gatsby Era gem combines a fascinating history & architectural design. Located on a gentle hilltop in the heart of Brookville. Tamburlaine Gate is surrounded by beautiful estates on gentle, rolling & wooded hillsides. It is convenient to shops & restaurants, universities, many golf courses, equestrian facilities, beaches, boating, museums, & more. It is approximately 27 miles from Manhattan. 1ST OWNER: Architect William T. Aldrich designed it for his brother, Winthrop Williams Aldrich, chairman of Manhattan Chase Bank & ambassador to the Court of St. James, under Eisenhower. The brothers’ father, Nelson W. Aldrich, was a U.S. senator for 30 years, & a brother-in-law, for decades considered the richest man in the world, John D. Rockefeller. 2ND OWNER: In 1950, the estate was sold to Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt II, great, great, great grandson of Cornelius Vanderbuilt, who founded the family fortune. His father died a hero when he gave his life jacket to a lady on the Lusitania that sank in World War I. 3RD OWNER: In 1956, grandson of F. W. Woolworth, James Paul (Jimmy) Woolworth Donahue, Jr., bought the estate, which is mentioned in his biography, DANCING WITH THE DEVIL, by Christopher Wilson. 4TH/5TH OWNER: After his death, the estate was purchased by Percy Uris, who, with his brother was known for building skyscrapers, which transformed the NY skyline. After Uris died, next was Louis Evangelista, a real estate investor & builder, who transformed it into Broadhollow Estates. PROPERTY: Includes a wide circular drive & generous parking area for guests. Steps lead down to a grassy allée passing through a former English perennial garden. At the end, was a secluded 61x 30 inground, heated pool that does not work & needs to be totally refurbished. This is a 3-story residence with a slate roof and coined brick exterior to gorgeous moldings, huge floor-to-ceiling windows, teak & oak floors, abundance of secret passages, 11 fireplaces, elaborate moldings, & artisan-created wall and window coverings. It is perfect for entertaining any number of guests or for relaxing. The home offers three floors of living space plus a full basement. The main floor boasts a grand entrance hall with cloak and powder rooms, a second foyer with impressive staircase, a ballroom-size living room, and banquet-sized dining room all with elegant fireplaces and gorgeous windows. But it also offers an intimate parlor with stunning French wall covering, a cozy family room with fireplace and built-in arched cabinetry, and a fabulous black-walnut library complete with billiard table, bookcases, fireplace, and secret stairs to the master suite. The now enclosed solarium was originally a loggia open to the weather. The 2nd floor provides bedrooms. In the main section, 5 have fireplaces & access to baths. There are also east & west wings. There is a spacious master BR with fireplace, walk-in closet, sitting room, with fireplace, & marble master bath with twin vanity, whirlpool tub, & a glass-enclosed shower. The walk-up 3rd floor includes a staff-quarters wing.
