We filmed several scenes for short film at Nick's place at the end of November, 2020, for duration of two full shooting days.
First thing I wanted to mention - it is mostly the owner. Very friendly, easy to communicate, helpful and time-efficient in handling any troubles or issues. In modern day Los Angeles to find place for filming with such accommodative property owner - is truly a gold, as it is already cuts down a lot of possible troubles for your team.
Secondly - it is actually not so easy to find decent boxing gym to shoot. There are few such places in Los Angeles that will look good on screen and let you shoot inside, plus will be at appropriate travel distance from downtown, will be big enough (in Nick's one we easily fit inside with crew around 20 people + equipment) and - most importantly - place you looking for will be in reasonable price range. This one fills all description points just perfectly.
And thirdly - building as a film set itself pretty much flexible. You can control light with few side and roof windows, shoot day for night, or envelope almost all interior with darkness, aside from selected spot. Being old warehouse - it have high ceilings and enough space to build and place around almost all kind of lights and equipment combination you may require - we used 2 cameras, rigged lights on top of ceiling and raised several on stands on sides of boxing ring itself. It also have wide roll over gates, which you may ask to open for quicker loading\unloading - wide enough to park back of truck inside gates.
For several additional plus points let me mention this - although in South LA warehouse district and near traffic busy street, interior pretty much soundproof - we needed to hold for sound just couple of times and got from two days a lot of usable on-set recorded dialogues. There is also decent two spacious rooms for make-up\green rooms. Oh, and add to this gated parking on premises of property.
Yes, you can not shoot anything you want here - it is firstly boxing ring + gym interior, so your scene\concept should reasonably match those ones. Although, being creative enough you can get a lot from this particular setting - we shot two story-wise separate scenes in this same building.
But you if you need boxing ring\sport gym set for reasonable price for film\commercial\music video or just photo-shoot with several crucial advantages - I advise you to talk to Nick, as it will safe a lot of your time, you may waste on scouting otherwise.
