Beautiful scenic Shenandoah Valley, Virginia (Fort Valley) Homestead Listed on the Virginia Register of Historic Homes and the National Register of Historic Homes The Daniel Munch House Pre-Civil War, Federal Style, Red Brick Estate home built in 1834 on a promontory above 1/4 mile of Passage Creek. It is a traditional "I-house" with an ell. 40 acres of fields and 36 acres of woods (a stunning stand of loblolly pines with a road cut through them) that are on a small mountain from which you can view the Massanutten Mountains and Fort Valley (George Washington National Forests) on both sides. The house has remained fairly untouched with with ORIGINAL WOOD TRIM, some original plaster, and ORIGINAL DECORATIVELY PAINTED TRIM - it's extraordinary and unusual. Each room of the "I house" (two over two) has a fireplace and beautiful mantles with British style trim and mostly original paint. The hallway and stairway are basically untouched and have some surprising features. There is a modern sitting room and "country" kitchen with a grand Colonial style brick fireplace. The front porch has a beautiful view of the valley and sunset. There is an enclosed porch on the back of the house built in the 1970's with standard windows and pine floors. The bathrooms are standard-issue Home Depot and are the first to be re-modeled and re-placed. The attic is untouched with original hand-hewn beams with Roman numeral markings, it also features a tin roof. The huge basement is brick and open under the entire house and currently has only gravel floors with ground level access. There are two depressing 1940's rooms above the kitchen, unused with beadboard ceiling panels and small windows. There is also a very large, grey barn down the hill from the front of the house, built circa 1900, with great bones and usable inside, with lots of dramatic holes letting light in. The outside of the barn is unpainted and weathered. Furthermore, there is a grey weathered animal shed, a covered shed with a corn crib, a smoke house and a modern gambled roof barn/shed. As you approach the home, there is a modern, girder (approximately 12 feet high) bridge over the creek. There is also a cemetery with four faded tombstones, one a Revolutionary War soldier. There are four hay fields that are backed with woods on three sides - the creek is fairly sized and touches all four fields. The land hosts an abundance of wildlife, including rangale of deer and flocks of turkeys. The Fort Valley of Virginia is a little over an hour from Dulles International Airport and under two hours from Washington, DC. There is more than ample room for parking on the property. Fort Valley is a very small community One general store, a fire/EMT department, a post office and a museum. Traffic would not be any issue and there is no commercial flight path overhead. Hotels, restaurants and most shopping and supply stores are 20-30 minutes away in the surrounding towns. The home is currently in the beginning stages of repair and remodel and is not occupied full time. The sun comes up from behind the house and sets in front of it, beautifully illuminating this Shenandoah County landmark.
