About the Space

THE SPACE Tucked beneath an enormous oak tree in a row of barrel-fronted brick townhouses, this 99 year old home is a time capsule filled with untouched original details and distinctive decor. Throughout the ground floor you'll find inlaid parquet floors, newly restored double-hung sash windows, and richly patinated woodwork that all date to the house's construction in 1925. The front room features a large pier mirror, french doors, and bay windows. Through a pair of pocket doors, the wainscoted “green” room features a coffered ceiling, plate rail, and built-in glass fronted cabinets. Up a creaky staircase, the second floor landing is well-lit throughout the day by a large stained glass skylight and accented with period light fixtures that are original to the house. The rooms are furnished with an eclectic mix of antique wood casegoods, vintage lighting, iconic mid-century pieces, and contemporary furniture. A pair of barrister bookcases in the front room hold a collection of curios and folk art ceramics, with more to be discovered in the built-in cabinets in the green room. Your booking also includes access to our eat-in kitchen, which was added in the 90's. While this area lacks the photogenic atmosphere of the rest of the house (it's ugly), the space can be utilized for staging, hair and makeup, and lunch breaks. You're free to take advantage of our backyard as well, but we wouldn't recommend it during mosquito season. As an optional add-on, either the upstairs bedroom or large home office may also be included in your rental. Both rooms receive an abundance of natural light through a set of stunning bay windows with views of evergreen hollies to the north and our massive oak to the south. THINGS TO NOTE Only the ground floor and upstairs landing is included in your rental. Inquire if you are interested in an additional bedroom or home office space. This is our full time residence and one of us will be present upstairs and out of your way throughout your booking. In the rare event of a sick day, our three year old may be upstairs with us as well. You may see us passing through to access the kitchen, retrieve packages, and come and go through the front door. This is an old house that has never undergone a major renovation. Be ready to embrace the wabi-sabi and historic charm that comes along with that and do not expect an immaculate newly-renovated interior. - The floors creak throughout the house and this should be a consideration for audio recording. - The pocket doors do not open and the french doors do not fully close. - The woodwork is generally in good condition but features a century's worth of built-up varnish, scuffs, paint splatters, and some isolated areas of water damage. - The left bay window in the green room is enclosed by our kitchen extension, it does not open to the outside. THE NEIGHBORHOOD Bay Ridge is a quiet, defiantly untrendy neighborhood. As a true melting pot of old-school Brooklyn Italians, Irish, and Greeks and more recent Arab, Chinese, and Latin American immigrants, the neighborhood has incredible food options and a welcoming, multi-cultural vibe. Hardware, groceries, and just about everything you might need is within walking distance. Production rentals and resources at Industry City and Adorama Brooklyn are within a 15-20 minute drive.
