Midcentury Modern in a Natural Setting

About the Space

Our residence is a custom, single-family, Midcentury Modern-inspired house that projects a horizontal wood volume across a gently sloping terrain as it assimilates a simple form and natural materials into a predominately suburban context. The house is sited outside the eastern limits of Fayetteville, Arkansas in an area dominated by late 20th century suburban homes. It sits perpendicular to the gentle slope between two converging swales and overlooks the pond (with fountain feature) on the south end of the property. The house is aligned with the neighbor to the north, but pivots slightly to frame the view and expand the native landscaping to the west. The Midcentury Modern aesthetic continues inside the home with an open public space incorporating the living room, dining area, and kitchen. The "great room" opens to the deck and features a wall of southwest-facing picture windows topped by clerestory windows that flood the room with natural light the entire day. Modern white built-in cabinets and the open kitchen delineated by navy tile and open walnut shelving occupy the opposing east-facing wall with high clerestory windows. The angled ceiling is 13 ft. at its highest point and spanned by large walnut beams. The primary bedroom faces the pond view with a multi-side slider opening to the private deck. The walk-thru bathroom features marble tile, an oversized shower with white 3-dimensional tile, a small built-in sauna, and two separate vanity areas with wall-hung custom walnut cabinets and round LED mirrors. Warm walnut and soft white walls throughout the home is punctuated by an orange entry door and teal/navy and orange accent colors.
