About the Space

Cantilevered over Lake Erie, 10 minutes outside Cleveland, OH, this secluded lake house sits alone on the lake. It's secluded down the hillside and offers panoramic views of Lake Erie. Originally designed in 1956 by world renowned architect J. Byers Hays (Cleveland Museum of Art, Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, Cleveland Municipal Stadium) this post and beam mid-century modern marvel was restored and reimagined in 2023. The interior boasts incredibly unique features that Hays, who is credited with bringing modern architecture to northeast Ohio, thought were the most special and ambitious of his residential designs. The main living area, with its soaring 22 ft vaulted ceilings, features original redwood paneling and is anchored by a 12 ft fireplace and surrounding “conversation pit” that has been updated to include comfortable bench seating below a massive concrete and plaster shallow relief sculpture on the wall above. Custom made, tonal, built-in cabinetry is featured throughout the space for added comfort, hidden storage, and beauty. The owners’ personal collection of artwork, literature, and original furniture are on display for the enjoyment of all who visit. The styling is a mix of mid-century modern and brutalist pieces. The exterior includes a large wraparound deck, cantilevered over the lake. The house sits at the bottom of a terraced hillside. The cozy primary suite boasts high-end finishes and an en suite bathroom. The loft has two full beds. It is a true loft peak ceiling, located above the primary suite. Adults can stand up in the center. Loft space not included in the 1100 sq ft measurement. Ladder access up to the loft. Additional half bath off of the living space.
