About the Space
A legacy Art Deco building and a hip martial arts studio combine to make this a unique and distinctive location in the heart of Pasadena. The 3,000 square foot space has concrete floors - some treated by a local artist - Zebra mats, heavy bags and Dojo equipment. The building dates back to 1937, when it was used as the site for a local newspaper, and retained features include bottom-hinged windows. An open floor plan and high ceilings allow for flexibility in production needs. What Makes location good for productions: Easy vehicle access, Tall ceilings, Overnight gear storage available, Safe neighborhood, Plenty of free street parking, Parking lots nearby, Great relationship with neighbors, Neighbors willing to rent out their space for production, Easy to work with, a cool older building, the original newspaper site in 1937, those neat bottom, hinged windows, What Makes This Location Unique: This building was the original newspaper in 1937, has that deco feel and is very open, full of light, high ceilings, bottom-hinged windows. The front room has an interesting floor, dyed and finished over the red concrete by a local artist. The back room the dojo proper is flat-out the coolest dojo I've seen. A great deal of equipment, heavy bags, hanging dummies, assorted BOBs. The out back is set up for both classes and comfort with patio-umbrella-ed tables around the sides and an American Kenpo Universal Symbol painted across the small parking area. It is simply a very cool, open space. Several shoots have found the two-room layout very handy for separating action from the monitors and directors.
