Fells House an updated mid-century modern set in the trees

About the Space

Nestled between the trees and the rocks in West Vancouver, Fells House was designed by renowned Canadian architect Ron Thom in 1958 and has been remastered in 2025 by D’Arcy Jones Architects. A new bedroom wing was added in the recent renovation, which is separated from the body of the original house with a wild forest courtyard between the old and new volumes. The original grey masonry carport wall and sculptural fireplace have been repaired and repointed, remaining as strong granite-coloured anchors. Ron Thom’s original composition of horizontal wood volumes and waist height strip windows that pinwheel around these solid vertical masses have been restored and added to. New cedar siding clads the entire exterior of the building whilst running from exterior soffits into the interior ceilings. The ground level features polished concrete floors, while oak hardwood floors are on the upper floor kitchen, living and dining areas. The house has four bedrooms located on the ground level, as well as a library/office. The ensuite off the primary bedroom overlooks the forest. Over 1000 square feet of outdoor deck space is accessible via the top floor including a private outdoor space surrounded by rock and greenery. Through sensitive modernization, Fells House maintains its mid century feel while also being a striking example of contemporary architecture.
