About the Space
The Captain James Allen House Built in 1850 by a retired whaling captain from New Bedford this majestic Greek revival home sits on just over an acre. This home boasts floor to ceiling windows, 10ft ceiling in the main spaces, hardwood floors, mature plantings, in ground pool, pocket doors, 3 black marble fireplaces. This home is in the process of being restored but all photos are accurate of current progress. Walls in living and dining rooms are raw exposed original plaster. The 3,591 sq ft home, sits back from the road on its granite-block foundation on an approximate 1.06 acre lot. Many will admire the full-width, 3-bay porch with Doric columns, and the 6-over-9 windows on the 1st floor of the facade, and 6-over-6 windows on the 2nd and 3rd stories. There is a similar 2nd porch with Mahogany deck to enjoy on the south side. History of the Captian: Captain James Allen made the pivot from Whaling Captain, to Farmer around 1851. After 20 years of service in the whaling industry, he was ready to retire and settle down in Acushnet to start a farm. By then, he had been married to his 2nd wife Eliza Anne (White) for 5 years. Eliza was the daughter of Ansel White. She was deeded an 1+ acre parcel of land on Long Plain, and Capt. Allen set to building the beautiful 2 1/2 story Greek Revival that now majestically sits at the corner of Lake and Main Street.
