About the Space

Our Culture & Community Center is spread within a 2300 square foot space, which includes a 48 seat theater, 800 square foot gallery, sculpture garden and grounds. Located near downtown Carmel, the Center provides an inviting environment for concerts, readings, solo dramatic performances and meetings. Now in its 73rd year, the location still retains all the ambiance of early Carmel. With its exposed wooden beams and Santa Maria stone fireplace, it provides a welcome respite from contemporary life. Established in 1948 by free-spirited, non-conformist artist and poet and her successful inventor husband, their world was the emerging bohemian art community. Together, their aspiration was to enrich the community’s culture through support of experimental and intellectual arts. Today, their home preserves the salon tradition in Carmel, providing an alternative space where artists explore new ideas in a warm, intimate setting. Rooms that were once living areas now serve as an 800-square-foot exhibit space for local and national artists and photographers. An adjacent area which was once a workshop, has now been transformed into a fully equipped forty-eight seat theater. Located within the grounds of the Center, the Sculpture Garden provides an exhibition of contemporary American outdoor sculpture. The garden contains five or more artworks at any given time, including works on loan by preeminent Monterey County artists. The informal garden includes a canopy of Monterey pine and native live oak, flowering trees and perennials. The circular path features seating for rest and reflection amongst the oaks. The location is available for all types of Events, Meetings and Photoshoots/ Filmshoots.
