Surrounded by the magnificent mountain ranges of the Plose, anders in South Tyrol is a a new retreat where guests become residents.Lean back, take a deep breath, and enjoy. Once you’ve arrived at ‘anders’, there’s no better place for it. Because up here on the Plose, everything is a little bit different. Seven suites, a fireplace room, a bar, restaurant, and excellent hospitality – that’s all it takes to feel at home at 1,850 metres, surrounded by untouched nature.HistorySome things were done ‚anders’ means differently, but the warmth and hospitality remained. And this has been true for several decades.Andreas Plattner has known the South Tyrolean Alps for a long time. “There was always something going on here,” says the host remembering his childhood up on the Plose. A few decades ago, his parents opened the Hotel Aurora, which over the years grew to be 50 rooms large. But the many harsh winters and hot summers left their trace on the lovingly run family hotel. “The house was getting old. Since a renovation wasn’t possible, I decided to make a fresh start,” says Andreas. But this new beginning went against the classic growth principle. The trained chef deliberately decided to reduce the size of the hotel and instead to create a retreat, which today comprises seven suites. “Of course we’ve grown, but in a different direction. We wanted to become smaller and more refined. In our eyes, less is not more, but better,” says Andreas, who was actively involved in the construction process from start to finish. He looks at the wooden guest house with pride, which he runs together with his wife. The host couple lives on site – is that why it feels like you’re a guest staying over at a family friend’s at ‘anders’? Sometimes, definitely. Because when Andreas Plattner isn’t talking to guests in the living room, he’s most likely found in the kitchen, where he creates regional dishes with passion and joy, refined with fresh herbs and spices from the hotel’s own garden. All this contributes to making you feel welcome at ‘anders’. Because good service isn’t something you see, it’s something you feel. The architectureAlpine tradition meets contemporary architectureWith the hotel’s refurb from ‘Aurora’ to ‘anders’, the architect Martin Gruber has created a new, minimalist refuge in which hospitality and design meet. The combination of tradition and modernity is evident in every nook and cranny at ‘anders’. Although the wooden façade, made of brushed spruce, has elements of a traditional mountain chalet, as is fitting for the South Tyrolean mountains, the flat cement roof and sculptural form undoubtedly make it a minimalist refuge. This thread also continues in the interiors of the ‘anders’. Clad with natural spruce, individual loop-like elements resurface on the walls. The stone-grey cement floor is reminiscent of the rugged mountains that surround the hotel, and contrasts with the soft textiles and fabrics that give the house a certain rusticity. This can already be felt when entering the hotel: Once you leave the glazed entrance door behind, you arrive directly at the heart of the ‘anders’, an open parlour in which a fireplace, a bar, and a restaurant area are located. “Here at anders, everyone’s got a front row seat to the mountains,” says Andreas Plattner, looking over at the chairs and benches in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, where he enjoys sitting himself. “I love looking out into nature from here and watching a thunderstorm, snow fall and th
