About the Space
Located on a hill overlooking the main house of this 14+-acre compound on a designated “Scenic Road,” this 2BR/1B c. 1929 solid stone cottage is just 60 miles from New York City. Guests have access to the entire cottage with kitchen, Great Room with movie screening and massive stone fireplace with wood-burning stove insert, screened “She-Shed,” and the full wooded property. The main house, a rambling 4B/4B cape, is also available. Candlewood Lake is a few minutes’ drive, and water views of a private lake are just past the driveway. Marrying Old World architecture with modern technology, the nearly one-hundred-year-old cottage boasts 17" solid stone walls and every possible modern update, featuring floodlight security lights, motion-detection cameras, movie/tv screen and built-in projector, Wi-Fi, and a SONOS sound system. The wife, an interior design book author and renovator of fourteen homes, brought a fresh French farmhouse aesthetic to the space. The Great Room, lined in wood planks and hand-cut beams, original lighting fixtures and doors, and stone fireplace, bears original wood trim recently brush-painted by her with hand-made paint. An abundance of natural light fills the space. The eat-in kitchen holds a French bistro table and chairs under a window. The dining area has an antique French farmhouse table and chairs. Two arched wood doors, hand-painted and bearing nearly 100-year-old wrought iron hardware and wooden cross bars for protection, are directly off the Kitchen and Great Room, and lead you to the screened patio. Two leather chairs create a great place to smoke cigars. A weathered teak table and chairs, with a modern propane heater, allow for bug-free dining in the middle of the woods. The Master Bedroom has a luxe king-size mattress and organic cotton linens. The bathroom was re-fitted with a glass shower enclosure and updated plumbing and fixtures. The second-floor loft bedroom has white-washed French antique sleigh beds and white wicker furnishings. This charming cottage is situated on the southern end of the very private town of Sherman, in the northern pocket of Fairfield County, CT. It is the northernmost town on Candlewood Lake, the state’s largest man-made lake. Given its ease of commute and proximity to New York City, as well as its water access, it has remained a summer vacation destination for dozens of years. Sherman is a straight shot from Manhattan’s East Side, north on the FDR, or West Side on the Henry Hudson or Saw Mill River Parkway. LaGuardia Airport is a 69-mile drive; JFK International Airport is a 76-mile drive; and Stewart International Airport is a 32-mile drive. Nearby train stations on Metro North’s Harlem Line include Katonah, Croton Falls, Southeast and Patterson.
