While en route to the beach house, Trent (Steve Carell) poses a question to Duncan (Liam James), asking him to assess himself on a scale from one to ten. Duncan modestly rates himself as a six, but Trent devalues him further by suggesting he's only a three. Upon arriving at the house, they are welcomed by their lively and alcohol-loving neighbors, including Betty (Allison Janney), her children Susanna (AnnaSophia Robb) and Peter (River Alexander), as well as the married couple Kip (Rob Corddry) and Joan (Amanda Peet). As night falls, Duncan and Susanna engage in an uncomfortable conversation from their neighboring porches.
