About the Space
Wykeham Lodge is a gorgeous, bohemian, evolving semi-detached Victorian Villa. Built in 1840 Wykeham - rendered, unpainted, imposing, set well back from the road - sits in a wild garden, girdled by trees. There’s a long hedgerow to the left as you enter and a large oak tree in the middle of the lawn, and a smaller hedgerow (fairly recently planted) to the right. She’s quite rarified. She’s a mixture of contemporary and traditional with an edge ie shuttered concrete walls and concrete floors, ply walls juxtaposed with bungeroosh walls and original wooden floors,, sash windows and rare Victorian shutters. Wykeham faces South and West, with a lot of space around her so the light - unhindered - is absolutely beautiful, mercurial, from morning to evening. The windows in the living space are large, there’s a bay window and plenty of space. Bespoke staircase made of reclaimed wood (from a Tobacco factory in Liverpool) and a beautiful steel balustrade. Two bathrooms: one with a cast iron bath , marble sink surrounds, huge mirror, dramatic black and white encaustic tiles; the other a wet room concrete floor and walls, white rendered walls, large floor to ceiling mirror, bespoke concrete trough sink, curved walls with reclaimed marble shelves and a gold-tiled wall. Brass fixtures and fittings in both bathrooms. Wykeham had lost many of its original features. Over the past 8 years she’s been lovingly restored (ongoing!) - there’s restored cornicing in each of the main Victorian rooms, ceiling roses, wooden doors and the house has double-glazed restoration hard-wood sash windows throughout. It’s set over 4 floors. The loft and the ‘bunker-basement’ (ground floor) are minimal and contemporary, built in concrete (as a nod to its former ‘basement ‘ incarnation) and ply, in dynamic juxtaposition to the “old house” - the bunker basement offers a snug, a wet room and a utility room, which would be ideal for preparing for shoots, make-up, costume etc.

We shot a fashion brand lifestyle shoot at this villa and the possibilities and choice of shots were endless. It is such a great property with so many interesting elements and rooms. The carefully curated furniture is wonderful and adds great character and class to the property. The host was extremely helpful and hospitable. This is a real hidden gem in the centre of Brighton. It a success all in all.

This was one of the best locations I’ve ever got, Sarah and Jordan were more than helpful even before making the booking. Would definitely recommend it if you are looking for a Victorian/gothic and most importantly a very nice hosts, 100% this is your place.

We had an incredible personal brand photoshoot at this gorgeous property this week. The interior is absolutely stunning and the light through the large windows gave us no end of options for shots in exactly the style we were looking for. The owner's attention to detail and how everything was styled made it our photographer's dream. Jordan and Sarah who own this beautiful property were on hand to answer questions from the moment that we booked and Jordan was incredibly generous during the photoshoot itself, providing us with refreshments and his time. Would 100% recommend!
