Set in the South Wales Valleys and an integral part of local history. The Institute was built by local miners and opened in 1908. In 1918 the Institute's Committee agreed to commemorate the 75 local men who lost their lives in the First World War, and the Memorial Hall opened in 1925 to honour their memory. The Memorial Hall houses the largest Ballroom in the South Wales Valleys which has been the centre of cultural activity since 1925 and is still in use today, from Ivor Novello’s mother, Joe Loss Big Band, Duran Duran, even The Manic Street Preachers (whose members used to work behind the bar). The Memorial Hall is recognised as important architecturally and historically by Cadw and the local Council; listed Grade II*. Its architectural heritage is of national importance as a major survival of an early auditorium built for cinema and theatre (opened 1925). In particular, our auditorium, is still reflective of the art deco period in which it was built. Our pricing depends on what rooms you wish to use during your booking. The prices currently seen on Giggster are reflective of the Theatre only hire. For other rooms, multiple rooms, or entire building hire, please provide information and specialised pricing will be provided.
