About the Space
Carlisle Memorial was built between 1872 and 1875 as merchant James Carlisle’s memorial to his children who died and a gift to his adopted city. It was designed by W.H. Lynn, one of Belfast’s pre-eminent Victorian-era architects, and became known as the ‘Methodist Cathedral’. The church closed in June 1980, and quickly fell into disrepair. BBT acquired Carlisle Memorial in 2011 and has since worked to secure the building's future and make it usable in the short-term. Since 2015, Carlisle Memorial has been a venue for various engagement activities and public events. The building has retained some of its dramatic and historic features with some modern amenities (including event electricity supply, domestic kitchen and 4x toilets) It is conveniently located in central Belfast, nearby to the Westlink motorway.
