About the Space

A wonderful old home situated in the beautiful farming community of Sheffield Massachusetts, minutes from ski resorts. The property connected to the house is 16 acres , with additional acreage dedicated to farming as far as the eye can see. There is a wooded cobble above the house to the west of the property, filled with wild life. We hear and see coyotes, bears, rattle snakes, bobcats, hawks and eagles, as well as deer, foxes, porcupines and beavers, regularly up there among the stone walls, water houses and other remnants of early farming days . The homestead was built and occupied by the Curtiss family from the early 1700's to 2018, until it was purchased. The oldest part of the current house was built in 1753, with subsequent extensions and modifications made over the years, as the family grew and their times changed. However, the home still feels very much of a time and place and whatever we have done ourselves, we did with that character and history in mind. There is an 18th century barn attached to the house and a larger, 19th century barn freestanding to the north side of the home. Only a few miles from the village of South Egremont and downtown Great Barrington, the house is in the heart of the Berkshire Mountains, known for their lakes and trails. The Appalachian trial crosses the top of the hill right above the house. The views and light all around are magical. The area is both remote and completely accessible by major roadways. The towns of Stockbridge, Lee and Lenox are also close by. There is a local tavern up the road that is said to have been where shay's rebellion was hatched and the entire area celebrates this sort of historic sensibility.
