The Samsung MUF-64BA is part of Samsung's new USB 3 stick family. Marketed as a range of slim and sophisticated flash drives, they are available in 3 form factors; bar, fit and duo. Here on test is the bar version, which is available in 16, 32 and 64GB versions. We look at the 64GB model which is available for £22.99.

This 64GB flash drive from Samsung is waterproof, shock proof, magnet proof, temperature proof and Xray proof. As well as this rugged 5-proof durability the stick has a sleek, super compact design made from metal. There is a also a formed loop enabling you to easily attach the drive to a keyring for safekeeping.

 Samsung is marketing this as a 'Super Speed' USB 3.0 flash drive, with a transfer speed of up to 130MB/s. It's also backwards compatible with USB 2.

The drive is simple to use, simply plug it into your machine.

We ran the drive through CrystalDiskMark software using USB 3.0 to test the speed, with results below:

We achieved a quick read speed although it's under the max achievable of 130MB/s. The write speed is pretty good, too. 

Value For Money

The Samsung MUF-64BA model is available for £22.99, with the 32GB version retailing for £13.99 and the 16GB version retailing for £9.99. The Fit USB, the most compact USB in the family, is available at the same price points but is only available in 32GB and 64GB versions. The Duo version of the drive, specifically designed for smartphone, tablet and PC users, featuring a MicroUSB port as well as the standard one, is available in 32GB for £14.99 and 64GB for £23.99. 

Overall, £22.99 for a memory stick which feels this well made with a 64GB capacity is not a bad asking price at all, and it's compact, too. 

A memory stick of a similar design also of 64GB capacity is the Kingston DataTraveler SE9 G2 which is available for £14.98 however max transfer speeds are not specified.

Overall, the Samsung MUF-64BA USB is a great choice if you want something well built, fast and stylish to transfer your images. If you want to transfer to and from tablets and smartphones, then the USB Duo will be a better option for you, and if you require something really compact, then look at the Fit.

The drives are pricey compared to other 64GB drives available however the Samsung drives have 5 proofing against shocks, water, magnets, extreme temperatures and X-rays along with a 5 year warranty for peace of mind. If you can spare the cash for a Samsung drive, then you'll find the investment work the extra money. We are happy to recommend the drive.
