About Reign

Reign, The CW’s historical romantic drama, follows the life of Mary, Queen of Scots as she rose to power. Starring Adelaide Kane as Queen Mary Stuart, the series focuses on her development from an innocent young woman to a decisive and determined ruler in the French court. Viewers also get a first-row seat on the complicated relationships she had with others both close to her and those seeking to take advantage. As she fights against court intrigue and treacherous allies, Mary must make tough decisions that affect Scotland, France, and herself. Throughout it all, she learns that there is no right answer, just sacrifices if she wishes to keep her throne safe. A fun fact about Reign is that some of the show’s actors portrayed famous historical figures. Megan Follows embodied Catherine de' Medici (King Henry II’s wife), Alan Van Sprang did justice to his character as King Henry II, and Toby Regbo portrayed King Francis II. Additionally, several of the costumes and sets were created with historical accuracy in mind. Research done by costume designer Meredith Markworth-Pollack, who consulted with historians and academics specializing in 16th-century fashion, added to the show’s historical accuracy. While a few main characters are completely fictional, including Bash, Gideon Blackburn, Lucile the Peasant, Narcisse, and a handful of minor characters, most of its protagonists are historically accurate. Of all the real characters, the tale of Claude of Valois was altered the most; her real life didn't feature an intense romantic life or outspoken nature. She married at 11, had 9 children, and died while giving birth at 27.
