About Field of Dreams

Field of Dreams, an iconic American sports drama, weaves together the world of fantasy and reality. Directed by renowned writer/director Phil Alden Robinson, this classic film is sure to leave a lasting impression in your memory.

Field of Dreams is based on the beloved novel Shoeless Joe, written by W.P Kinsella in 1982, that follows a father’s struggles to build a baseball field against all odds for his son who he lost too soon. Kevin Costner stars as a determined farmer who constructs an extraordinary baseball field in his cornfield, captivating the spirits of celebrated figures such as Shoeless Joe Jackson (played by Ray Liotta). James Earl Jones, Amy Madigan, and Burt Lancaster (in his last role) also feature in the film that was released theatrically on May 5th, 1989.

Field of Dreams was met with widespread acclaim, and its success culminated in three prestigious Academy Award nominations, one of which was for Best Picture. In 2017, the Library of Congress' United States National Film Registry recognized its historic, cultural, and aesthetic importance by preserving it in their registry.

In August 2021, it was announced that Field of Dreams was being remade as a TV series for Peacock and Michael Schur had signed on to write the script. However, in June 2022, the project was taken off Peacock and Universal Television began shopping it around elsewhere.

During production of the original film in Iowa, the film crew encountered issues with the Iowa farm's stunted corn crop due to a severe drought, prompting the crew to spend $25,000 to transport water from the Mississippi River at last minute to try and revive it. As an insurance policy against this plan failing, silk corn stalks were also ordered from South Korea—though it wasn't necessary as the real crop eventually grew.

Field of Dreams Locations

Filming started on May 25th, 1988. Since Kevin Costner had to leave to shoot Revenge in August, the filming schedule was adjusted to suit his availability. Dubuque County, Iowa, was the main site for shooting locations with a nearby farm being transformed into the Kinsella homestead and an abandoned warehouse in Dubuque as the backdrop to create various life-size interior sets.

The town of Galena, Illinois was transformed for the filming of Moonlight Graham's town of Chisholm, Minnesota. Additionally, an entire week was spent in Boston to capture scene shots at Fenway Park and other incredible landmarks. Some delays were encountered due to weather conditions and other time constraints, but mostly production rolled six days a week. To capture the required cornfield scenes quicker than normal growth would allow, irrigation was needed to speed up the process so it matched Costner's height.

The farm owned by Don Lansing in Dyersville, Iowa, served as the filming location for the Kinsella family scenes. To save time due to a tight shooting schedule, the neighboring farm of Al Ameskamp was utilized for some of the baseball field scenes. To create a makeshift diamond, specialists in laying sod from Dodger Stadium and the Rose Bowl were brought onboard—their efforts also included painting part of the turf green.

Ray Kinsella resides on a corn farm in Dyersville, Iowa, with his wife Annie (Amy Madigan) and daughter Karin (Gaby Hoffmann). Struggling with his fractured relationship with his beloved late father John (Dwier Brown), an enthusiastic fan of baseball, Ray worries about getting old without accomplishing anything.

As Ray strolls through his sprawling cornfield one evening, he hears a mysterious voice whispering to him, "If you build it, he will come." He then sees a vision of a baseball diamond in the middle of the field, with Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta), who passed away in 1951, standing at its center.

Most of the scenes in this movie were filmed at Dubuque, located at the northernmost tip of Iowa alongside Illinois and Wisconsin.
