I would absolutely return to this location in a heart-beat if another shoot arose in the Philadelphia area. Joe and the team at Billy Penn was fantastic and more accommodating than many other locations I've used. They were very communicative, helpful, and responsive to any and all requests and needs we had on-hand, and went out of their way to make the experience as pleasant and positive as possible. Moreover, the location itself was clean, gorgeous, provided all power, internet, AC/Heat, and privacy we needed, and is within close distance to a handful of restaurants and stores for food and supply runs. There was an onsite cafe, which was fantastic for quick coffee runs, and onsite community of businesses in the building that came in handy when we were missing a few pieces of equipment for our shoot (one of the businesses was a video rental house). Would absolutely recommend using this location, and look forward to using the location again for future shoots in the Philadelphia area.

Underground venues can also be cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter, making them more comfortable for both performers and audiences.

Pros and Cons of Underground Events in Philadelphia

Philadelphia is a great city with a lot to offer, but there are some things to keep in mind if you're considering attending an event at an underground venue.

Advantages

  • Since underground venues tend to be more casual, they are also less expensive.

  • Instead of being in a large outdoor or windowed setting, an underground venue feels more compact allowing for a more intimate feel to the party.

  • Underground venues tend to be easy to climatize, since they retain more heat in the winter and more cold in the summer. The temperature is easy to adjust and maintain throughout an event.

Disadvantages

  • Because of their compact sizing, certain underground venues can have more of a limited space, meaning you’ll possibly have to reduce your guest list.

  • Underground venues aren’t always super accessible, due to their nature of being more of a “hidden” venue.

  • Certain events or performances may be harder to execute or capture, simply because of the space. Being underground means that the sky isn’t exactly the limit anymore.

Tips on How to Organize Underground Events in Philadelphia

If you're looking to add a little excitement to your life, Philadelphia is the place to be. An underground event can be anything from a speakeasy-style party to an industrial punk rave. No matter what you're into, there's an underground scene for you. Here are some tips on how to get involved in the action.

  • Research the location: Philadelphia is a big city, and there are a lot of different events going on at any given time. You'll need to figure out what kind of event you're interested in and then find out where it's happening. Once you've done that, it's time to reach out to your network of friends and see who's interested in joining you.

  • Lay out your plans: Once you know where the event is taking place, it's important to plan your route and figure out how you're going to get there. If you're not careful, you could end up getting lost or running into troublesome traffic. So take your time and plan everything out in advance.

  • Be prepared and cover all your bases: Underground events are by their very nature unpredictable. Things can sometimes get out of hand, so it's important to be prepared for anything that might happen.

  • John F. Collins Park
John F. Collins Park is a charming oasis in the heart of Center City. Nestled between Chestnut and Ranstead Streets, the park occupies a small but well-utilized space. Its ivy-covered walls and wooden benches create a cozy atmosphere, and its native trees provide much-needed shade on hot summer days. The centerpiece of the park is a cascading fountain of concrete pillars, which adds a touch of elegance to the space. The park also features a number of lunch tables, making it a popular spot for office workers looking to get away from their desks for a few minutes.

  • Eastern State Penitentiary
Eastern State Penitentiary was once one of the most famous prisons in America, thanks in part to its extensive use of solitary confinement. Built in 1829, the prison was designed to be a model of reform, with inmates living in their own individual cells and being challenged to reflect on their crimes. Today, Eastern State Penitentiary is a popular tourist destination, with close to 220,000 people visiting each year. Visitors can explore the massive Gothic structure on self-guided tours, learn about the prison's tumultuous history through exhibitions, and even enjoy a haunted house during Halloween.
