About Dallas
Dallas, Texas has a rich history as one of the most prominent cities in the Southwest. Founded back in 1841, the city has played an important role throughout the development of many industries and American culture.
In the present day, Dallas is a hub for production and content creation while also being home to many iconic attractions like its towering skyscrapers and historic downtown area. What might be less known is that some dilapidated locations around the city have recently become quite popular among visitors looking for Instagram-worthy photo spots and history buffs alike. Photographers will also find these rundown locations to be suitable for lifestyle, streetwear, gothic-themed, or even engagement photoshoots. Filmmakers, on the other hand, can use these spots for horror movies.
Apart from filming, dilapidated locations also serve as charming backdrops for events, whether it’s a wedding, birthday party, or auction. From abandoned warehouses to derelict buildings, there is a spot in Dallas that can scratch that itch for something unique!
Dilapidated Event Options in Dallas
- Props and Furniture
Props and furniture are essential when shooting in dilapidated locations, as they can help to create a more realistic atmosphere. Various rental companies offer props and furniture for rent so that production teams don’t need to invest in their own items. Some of these rentals even include vintage furniture items which can bring an old-fashioned charm to a scene.
- Production Company
A production company is necessary for shooting in dilapidated locations, as they will be able to provide the equipment and support needed to ensure that everything runs smoothly. Not only do they offer on-site assistance with filming and lighting, but they can also help to coordinate actors and other personnel. Additionally, they can provide guidance and advice on which locations are most suitable for the project.
- Handyman
For more complex filming projects, it’s important to have a handyman on hand to make sure that everything runs smoothly. Handymen will be responsible for any minor repairs or set-dressing needed throughout the shoot, as well as ensuring that all safety regulations are met. They can also provide advice on which areas of the location require special care, and how best to protect any delicate items.

Pros and Cons of Dilapidated Locations in Dallas
Dilapidated locations in Dallas can offer photographers and filmmakers a unique and interesting atmosphere for producing special projects. However, as with any decision, there are pros and cons to using these locations that may need to be considered.
Advantages
- Because of the age and poor upkeep of dilapidated locations, they often have a unique look that sets them apart from other locations. They can add an element of intrigue or danger to projects, adding an extra layer of depth to the visuals.
- Many dilapidated locations are located in areas where other properties are scarce, making them relatively easy to access without having to go through the hassle of competing for prime real estate.
- By revitalizing old structures, filmmakers have the opportunity to contribute to preserving a piece of history while also helping breathe new life into an area that could otherwise become forgotten over time.
Disadvantages
- Buildings that are not well-maintained can pose a significant risk due to potential structural instability or electrical issues.
- Depending on the amount of damage present within a location, it may take more time than normal for crews and cast members alike to make it safe enough for use; this could potentially delay production schedules if not taken into consideration beforehand.
- With many dilapidated buildings lacking modern amenities such as electricity and running water, filmmakers may need alternate methods for providing resources during production such as bringing generators or portable toilets on location.
Tips on How to Organize Photoshoots at Dilapidated Locations in Dallas
Preparing a dilapidated location in Dallas for shooting can be a challenging yet rewarding task. You’ll be dealing with a structure that has stood the test of time and may pose a risk to those who’ll be using it. Thus, safety should be the utmost priority. Here are some tips to help you get started on the right foot:
- Ensure Safety of Surroundings: Before you begin any preparation, it is important to inspect the area around the location and ensure that all buildings and structures are secure and safe. Make sure that there are no weak spots that could be hazardous to the safety of cast or crew members.
- Clean Up the Site: Once you've obtained all necessary permissions, start tidying up by removing debris such as broken glass or other hazardous materials from the premises. This will help create a safer environment for everyone involved during filming activities.
- Prepare Exterior Structures: Inspect all exterior structures such as doors, windows, and railings for signs of damage or wear-and-tear which could pose a risk during shooting activities. Make sure they're properly secured so they don’t collapse suddenly while people are present on set!
- Repair Interior Structures: Ensure all interior structures have been assessed before moving forward with production by checking walls, floors, ceilings, and staircases for signs of structural weakness. It is always recommended to hire professionals to conduct repairs when needed since improperly done DIY repairs could lead to further issues down the line.
- Test Powering Equipment: If electrical power will be needed on set, assess whether existing outlets are adequate or if additional ones need to be installed to handle high-wattage equipment like cameras and lighting rigs without tripping circuits or overloading wires due to too much current draw from all devices connected simultaneously at once.
- Set Up Safety Protocols: Last but not least, establish safety protocols for cast and crew members before embarking on shooting to minimize potential risks that could arise due to unforeseen obstacles, such as overcrowding or inclement weather conditions. Have appropriate fire extinguishers placed throughout the set in case of emergency and assign designated stand-ins who can fill in whenever required without compromising safety standards on set.
Famous Locations in Dallas
- Timberlawn
In 1917, Dr. James J. Terrill established the Timberlawn Sanitarium on 11 acres of land outside Dallas that consisted of an orchard, garden, and grove. The expansive grounds were supposed to aid patients' recovery from mental illness by providing fresh air and space to stroll outdoors. The property included a large two-story house with an attic that was converted into a sanitarium building. For many years, Timberlawn was a reputable institution for care and research. However, in the late 2000s, it came under fire with claims of inadequate staffing, poor service, and patient safety issues, including sexual assaults. As the problems continued to mount and they neared non-compliance with regulatory standards, the decision was made to close Timberlawn's doors in February 2018. The buildings on site were then demolished a year later.
- Mountain Creek Lake
Nestled in the countryside within easy reach of local amenities, Mountain Creek Lake is a man-made reservoir that provides flood control and recreational opportunities. A popular destination for locals and visitors alike, the lake's scenic views and mild climate make it an ideal spot for second homes and retirement homes. Unfortunately, due to its pollution problems stemming from sewage spills and stormwater runoff, swimming and fishing are no longer allowed in the lake. But you can still enjoy plenty of family-friendly activities like hiking, horseback riding, boating, and camping. Take a breather from your daily routine and revel in the beautiful sights of Mountain Creek Lake—it's worth it!
- Longhorn Ballroom
The Longhorn Ballroom opened in 1950, ran by O.L Nelms. It was originally a musical venue for Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys to play Western Swing music. The ranch house contained a large dance floor, barbeque restaurant, outdoor area, and retail space—giving audiences plenty to do between sets. Almost 20 years later, Douglas 'Dewey' Groom was brought in as manager of the club. He bought the building, gave it a new Western-style front facade and an iconic sign with a bull at Corinth Street, and renamed it Longhorn Ballroom. Groom kept up Nelms's commitment to country music and built the Longhorn Ballroom into one of the preeminent Country and Western venues during its time. Aerosmith even filmed a music video in the ballroom in 1989 for “What it Takes.” In 2017, Jay LaFrance bought the building and renovated the exterior. It was purchased out of bankruptcy in 2022 and reopened on April 1st, 2023 with an act from the band Asleep at the Wheel.
