Gastown Atrium

  • 450 people
  • 1 hr min
  • 5000 sq/ft
Covering almost an entire city block, this site, once a major department store, served as the city’s historic and social core. Situated amongst the different programs, the enclosed atrium acts as the heart of the development, creating a space that feels open to the sky yet is protected from the elements. On the surrounding walls inside the atrium are significant works of public art. The ambitious photographic recreation of the Gastown riots, Abbott & Cordova, 7 August 1971 by Stan Douglas, takes us back in time, while simultaneously alerting us to the historical significance of the area. Additionally in the middle of the atrium is a basketball court which is open to the community. The atrium is ideally suited for large casual events yet could also be used for more formal gatherings. Located centrally in Gastown, the space evokes a sense of culture, history and community. The space has previously been used for markets, filming projects, performances, art battle, etc.. It is quite a diverse place making it possible for different events/projects to take place.
