Comfortable space, open environment, friendly host. Our auditions were a success at this location. The only feedback I'll give is that the bathroom is a lot closer to the main space we were using than hoped and was slightly disruptive in our first two auditions. Outside of that the space was ideal.

About Casting

The importance of good casting can never be underestimated. Of course, finding the right talent for your next creative endeavor is about more than just finding someone with the perfect look. They also need to be experienced and professional, hard-working and easy to work with, and with all the necessary skills to get the job done right.

But before you can begin the casting process for your next project, you need to find the right casting location. The best casting space will not only be perfectly practical, with all the space and facilities you need, but it’ll also be easily accessible and help create a professional image for your production.

So how do you find a great venue to help take the stress out of casting day? Let’s take a closer look at some of the casting venue options and how to find a space that offers everything you need.

The Best Casting Venues

You might be surprised by the diverse range of venues that can be used to cast your next project. Some are traditional theaters and performance venues, while others double as office venues and creative studios. The choice comes down to working out what sort of setting you need for success, then finding a suitable space.

  • Theaters and Auditoriums
For some projects, you’ll want your prospective talent to tread the boards in a theater. From community theaters and auditoriums to grand concert venues and playhouses, there’s a diverse range of spaces to choose from. Using them will give you the chance to assess how each actor performs on stage, and how effectively they command the space. This underground theater in LA is perfect if you want to see talent audition up-close in an intimate performance setting.

  • Studio Spaces
The studio environment is a great choice when you need to assess talent in front of the camera. You’ll have different lighting, backdrops, and props at your disposal, and many spaces offer all the tech features you need for a full-scale dress rehearsal.

  • Performance Spaces
Performance spaces come in all shapes and sizes. Some are old industrial warehouses or underground bars, while others are bright and airy lofts, gallery spaces, or churches. Each space offers its own unique atmosphere that could help you discover the perfect person for the role.

  • Office Spaces
Some casting days work best when run in a humble office environment. Practicality is often the main aim when you choose this sort of casting venue, as it gives you a chance to efficiently audition a long list of people in a convenient location.

What to Look for in Casting Spaces

Choosing a casting space isn’t always as straightforward as you might expect. Take some time to think about what you need in a venue and why, and how you can use the right space to better assess the skills of the talent you’re assessing. And as always, make sure you have a budget and stick to it.

  • Location
First and foremost, the best casting venue is one that’s easily accessible. Something in a central location will often work well, but it’s also important to consider factors such as proximity to public transport before you book a space.

  • Size
Any location you choose will obviously need to have sufficient space for you to work with. That means room for you and any crew to operate comfortably, green room space where actors can prepare, and of course some sort of performance or interview space where the talent can strut their stuff.

  • Facilities and Amenities
Now it’s time to cast your eye over prospective venues from a practical point of view. Make a checklist of the must-haves for your casting space, which may include things like private parking, stage space, sound and lighting systems, auditorium-style seating, green room, heating/cooling system, and musical equipment. This list could be a long one, so take some time to make sure you haven’t forgotten anything.
  • The Right Price
The other factor to consider is how long you will need the space for. Casting sessions can often run longer than expected, so keep your budget in mind when deciding on the best space for your needs.

Casting Inspiration

Making the right casting decisions starts with finding the right casting venue. But once you have a clear idea of exactly what you need from a space, it’s easy to find and compare a wide range of options.

  • Treading the Boards in a Theater
Sometimes the best way to determine an actor’s suitability for a role is to see them perform on stage. That way you can not only assess their look and acting chops, you can also determine whether they’ve got what it takes to command the audience’s attention.

  • Running Lines in a Rehearsal Room
Rehearsal rooms are designed with practicality in mind, so whatever you need for your casting session, you’ll find it in a properly equipped rehearsal space. We’re talking plenty of room to move, different flooring options, mirrors, AV gear, musical instruments, and essential furniture. Perfect when you’re auditioning multiple people at once to see if they’ve got the right chemistry.

  • Green Screen Audition
Does your next creative project call for actors to do some or even all of their work in front of a green screen? If so, doing a dry run in a green screen studio is a must. There’s no shortage of green screen stages to choose from, and they typically include all the lighting gear and tech equipment you need to get to work straight away.

  • Strutting Their Stuff in a Dance Studio
Acting can be a very physical profession, and the most talented performers can communicate exactly how they’re feeling without even saying a word. So if you need a casting space where actors can run, jump, dance, prance, and cavort in comfort, a dance studio could give you the sort of blank canvas you need to get to work.
